Hi I am purchasing a bolex bevel splicer (REG8/SUPER8) and was wondering if there is a manual anywhere to download on how to use it ?
Also does anyone have any tips on how to use the splicer as so many people have said it is a really good splicer to have
What type of cement is best to use on it ?
Hope there is a downloadable manual somewhere!!
Best Regards
Richard...

That's it, and in English, too.
Mine was not so easy.

Great thanks guys I have been studying the manuals that you put on here I have saved them aswell for future use.
Also Regular 8mm I think your site is a really good read I have saved that to my favourites so I can keep looking back at it from time to time. I noticed that the splicer has minimal maintenance but do the scrapers wear and if so are they replaceable or is it just unheard off as it probably takes a lifetime to wear out??. Also where can you get KODAK CEMENT from in england ?
Thanks Again to both off you much appreaciated information

Hi,
I guess you'd have to send the splicer off to Bolex to have it reconditioned or buy another from them. Pretty pricey though.
Widescreen centre has glue FM420 Film Cement £8.16 it doesn't say if it is Kodak or not. Bristol Cine Sales may have it, call Deran too. I got film cleaner from them. Thanks for the kind words about my web(s). Suggestions are welcome.
Later,
Michael Carter
ps. from the Kodak site, we can order cement from Sweden.

Here's more info from the manual from a page I did not take a picture of (don't have the digital camera on me right now).rick201 wrote: I noticed that the splicer has minimal maintenance but do the scrapers wear and if so are they replaceable or is it just unheard off as it probably takes a lifetime to wear out??.
"After considerable use the scraper blades may become less sharp, in which case they can be replaced by any offical Bolex distributer"
"The Bolex splicer does not need special maintenance. It should be kept clean and free form dust. Deposits of dry cement should be removed with a non-metaillic tool or by a cloth moistened with acetone. Occasionally, one drop of fine oil should be added to the scraper hinges and the end of the scraper springs"
When I got mine they both needed a few drops of oil to bring back normal mobility to the scraper and blades. I do notice that one of mine scrapes faster as if the scraper is sharper than the other. The more dull it gets the more strokes you'll have to use to get the job done. Bolex international is still in business, maybe they still have scraper replacements?

PDF conversion offer....
If you send me your scans in TIFF (or jpeg, though I haven't tried converting that format) - I'll be happy to convert them to a PDF.filmbuff wrote:Best advice I can give is to make sure you scrape all the emulsion off. The amount of cement is easy to get the hang of, you just need some scrap film to practice on first before you go cutting into important footage. I use Kodak cement, works perfect. Manual is below 8) (pardon the finger)
