pushed me and My Canon 310XL aside and stole my shoot place in front of the Empereor´s Palace in Tokyo in an attempt to try to rig their true amateurish ARRI gear:

Remember that without a 310xl they have to shoot while there's plenty of light
Anyway look at the SIZE of that thing and think of all the shots they miss because they just can't be spontaneous

Very good point :D

I have always claimed that creativity is inverse analog to the size of the film format used or gear size for that matter.

Exception is video which is the lowest ranking on creativity without exception, by any measure, hands all ways,,

Interesting, I had always assumed that China was like Russia and used its
own brands of cameras or at least copied the Soviet design like they often
did.

The only problem Woods is that they are in Japan.

I usually have that many people standing around me when I am shooting super 8 - they are always asking what kind of camera I have, how does it work, is it really waterproof, can you still get film, etc. They have the same confused looks as the jokers in that picture.

My favourite time was when I used my Nautica as a paddle at a recent backyard pool party. My cousin has his new Nikon D100 at the time and I asked him if his camera could do "this" as I jumped from the diving board into the pool with the film running. The kids loved it, he just groaned and continued to fiddle with the settings! I late simply left it on the deck to dry in the sun...all cameras should be treated with such respect!

Cheers,

Cameras in China

Post by utilityskate »

Hmmm, about cameras in China, I was watching a documentary at the HK Film Festival by a director called Carma Hinton who had lived in China during the cultural revolution. Some of the footage of Chairman Mao showed these guys filming him with what looked like Bolex H16s.........

Then had been interviewing different people including one guy who had documented part of the revolution, I guess he was an aspiring film maker at the time and he was talking about how they had gone for a long trek into the countryside and how they were going where there was no electricity so he brought along a 16mm camera that needed winding up.

I really wonder where they got those cameras.

Hmmm.... seem like I have to get my self a Nautica.

Apropos to the initial post:

I tried to regain my position by moving towards them - while filming them with my cam. They then realized it was a film camera but one they have never seen before so at first so they were totally tarotfied shouting "no massa - not the "Dome Day Machine". However, I tried to settle with them offering some clips from my film if they wanted an insert with S8 "look" since I used the Fuji F500T film. However - they were totally lame-struck, unable to settle and finally my time ran out so I had to withdraw from my position. Amateurs!

Regarding japan vs 35mm cams.
I believe that the demand for new professional 35mm cams are/were relatively small - when serviced they lasts "forever" so I do not think this buzz has ever attracted japanese companies to ever look into it. Also the technologogical progress 35/16mm is very slow and not very advanced - very different from many S8 cams.

When it comes to commie systems they were always "proud" to be self-supplied by everything - it was a political issue. Thus the Soviet/East German/Chinese+++ "homebrews" I guess. Big quality variations generally. Funded by the "5 year plan" government "money pump".

However - sometimes the simple, reliable, well and tried is the best.
Look at the Sojuz rockets reliably pumping goods and nauts forth and back from the space station.

Well, each camera has it's own size, weight and offers different possibilities.

We can be spontaneus with any camera, just because the camera it's stuck on the floor it doesn't mean the scene will be necessarily predictable. Man has it's means to explore every situation with creativity.

But, honestly, by the looks of the photos you took there, aparently there is no creativity at all, but who knows?

This is not a photo - it is a snap taken only for the prupose of showing these amateurs in "action" to the serious 8mm shooters on this board.
By the way - pretty fine grained images for a 800 ASA neg? A pinch underxposed - yes, yes I know but heck.

Unless anyone wants to wade the canal there were not many options either.

Anyway - me always much more clever being with moving image cameras than still stuff. Strange. Maybe I am a dynamic person :?: Hey, maybe that´s why I am so keen on shooting M O T I O N F I L M?
No, I do not shoot reel stuff on DV.

Shooting film is like having a Schmeisser pointing at your back.
You have to p e r f o r m.
(Ok a ZM4008 almost sounds and looks like a Schmeisser - or UZI for that matter - no; 9000 rounds a minute works out to?? - 150 a second but does it really make any difference? I think a Schmeisser sounds more correct ;-))

DV is voluntary working with wheelchair + chrunches and a fellow follower + guide. Can´t get no kick outta that? (No offending to those who are unlucky to be in that situation) (Who did I actually mean here?)

Forever liveth only the taped - sorry lost
Now - who wrote that Lucas
