I'm in for sure!
I'm just waiting to get my latest film back from Kodak. Then i will make super fast editing with it and post it/transfer it to you, along with one other film....
Anyhow i think we should have this another threat. That way we can count how many films we would have and do we have enought the for dvd?

I want to be a part of this -- I have three short films that I've made in the last 3 years but only one of them has copyright-free music attached to it and it's fifteen minutes long. I just had it rank transferred and need to do some editing in FCP...have to get someone to help me with that program first. Is there a deadline on this?
Here in the netherlands you do not have to pay rights for the music as long as you produce not more then 50 dvd's. But I think that amount will easily be surpassed.I want to be a part of this -- I have three short films that I've made in the last 3 years but only one of them has copyright-free music attached to it and it's fifteen minutes long
Well, some time ago I made a short promo film of a bar (in super 8 ) which was to be distributed among customers etc. We wanted to make 500 mini cdroms with the film on it (and the name and address of the bar printed on top of it). The business which was going to do that for us said he could not do this without having permission of the official office which guards the musicians rights. I had quite an elaborate talk with this office and he said that under 50 I did not have to pay anything. However they did have all kinds of low budget arrangements and for quantities under 2000 copies. The cd rom was to be (and has been) distributed freely. Maybe that made a difference as well. Of course they can't check if you will use it for personal use, so maybe they decided 50 copies is identical to that.if this is true, surely it has something to do with "personal use"? are you really allowed to distribute them publicly, commercially or not?
I wonder if it is the same in other countries as well, since some of the music was based on a composition of Piazolla, who is not exactly Dutch. And he (or his representatives now) will have to be payed. It would be interesting to give the Swedish office a call to see if your country apllies the same rules.

This is an interesting quandry because of the international nature of this project - the films will be coming from all over the world and the dvd's will be sold to all over the world.
What to do?
Perhaps it has to be a point of eligibility that each contributor has the international rights for each piece of music secured and that they sign a waiver absolving the organisers/burners/sellers of the dvd of any liability should there be any problem. This might sound cumbersome but really is a necessity I think.

Read my science fiction novel The Forest of Life at https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D38AV4K
Another option, for those that don't have access to a talented musician or other copyright free music is: I have about 10 or so Smart Sound CD libraries. If you don't know what smart sound is go to their website http://www.smartsound.com. It is canned music that you can stretch or shrink to match your video length. It isn't all that bad for canned music and I have used it on a number of professional jobs. I could put some of that music to your video if you want/need.Scotness wrote: Perhaps it has to be a point of eligibility that each contributor has the international rights for each piece of music secured and that they sign a waiver absolving the organisers/burners/sellers of the dvd of any liability should there be any problem. This is exactly what I did - I wrote a contract for all the submissions that stated the artists was the creator of their work or had secured permissions for the use of music, etc. I also spent a lot of time researching intellectual property rights, clearing music etc. It's a hassle. But here's the basic concept with music rights for film - which applies internationally - you need "performace rights" which means permission to use the actual recording of the song, and "synchronization" rights, which means the permission from the owner of the music and lyrics to use it with your film. Universal Music Group handles synchronization rights for a huge catalogue of music. Check it out here:

Anyway, I shot some super 8 for this DVD, some very grainy black and white, for the intro and menus.
Ralph, can you please put a copy of the contract you made online, so everyone who contributes can print it out and submit it along with the film?
I have a 3 minute music video that I would like to submit and I am trying to compile a one minute showreel.
I strongly encourage everyone who is able to submit a film, or at least a showreel. Better still, both.
Cheers,
