If you explore the IAC site you will find many cine clubs in the UK.

Thank you regular8mm and pelluet for proposals. I advertised the survey in the IAC forum. I thought advertising in magazines over and decided not to use them, because there are so many of them in the world:-) If you choose one, you have to select another too. But when I collect the results in November, I can send summary to the Amateur Cine Enthusiast Magazine too. I believe they are interested in it.

One third of the participators has been born in the 1910-1950's, which means that many film amateur "veterans" - those who have filmed during the "golden age" of 8mm (appr. before 1985) - have also found the survey.

I hope I can reach some Single8 amateurs too, who are mostly from Japan, I think.

(I notice now, that this is little problematical. Because its film format is the same as in super8, I didn't make difference between them. Those who have used Single8, can only tell this in the other parts of survey.)

88 answers at the moment! It is more than I hoped for so I must thank all of you. But it is not too late to go and answer the questions if you haven´t done it yet. I´ll start writing the results in November so there´s pretty much time left.

You have mentioned a very good point. The male domination of film or rather filmmaking as a field where the majority of creators are men. I have had a great many discussions about this with a Female DP I know and work with on a regular basis. The Male/Female balance is another Ph.D. Thesis waiting to happen!!

I am sure that home-movies will tell future researchers something of the way things where. The German ZDF TV broadcast company had an odd 12 weeks on a row in 2002 where each saturday latenight Super8 home movies from all around Germany where shown on TV for half an hour. Great fun!

aren't you confusing mean age with mean starting age? most of the participants were born in the 50's, 60's and 70's and still you say that the mean age is 20 years and the older shooters were hard to find? my own calculations give a mean age of 37 years, which sounds more right.

Yes, you're right, 20 years is "mean starting age". And the mean starting age was calculated so that I suggest the "mean birth year" in each group was ((born in decade) + 5 years).
