well, i wasn't saying that blown up dv looks good, just that there shouldn't be any scan lines.

you mean 486/576, right? anyway, blow ups are typically done at 2k at least so you're still not quite right. you might see loss of sharpness, blown out highlights, stairstepping, mosquito noise and other dv artifacts, but there should absolutely not be any visible scan lines.
sorry to be such a pain, but you all know that i'm very anal about terminolgy and keeping the facts straight. :-)

i disagree. first off all i think transfer to film does give video some of that "magic" film look, and second video shot for blow up is often lit flat and later color corrected with the blow up in mind. video shown on tv looks like a news broadcast no matter how you light it imho, and even if going to film and back heavily degrades the image it still looks "better".

Don't worry, I'm getting used to the "anal" exact terminology stuff. I was thinking in terms of "stairstepping, mosquito noise and other dv artifacts" and calling them just scan lines. Stairstepping in particular is very annoying to me.
Actually it's very interesting to have somebody so concerned with exact terminology when I make some generalized comments. I can see some rather less than stable individuals going off on a tiraid though. LOL By the way, what happened to that guy in the mexican desert? He was SO funny!
Patrick -- Lucas and those guys were very proud of the fact that the new films they did were the first films to originate on HD and be transfered to DVD directly without film inbetween. Made a big huge deal out of it. Not that it makes any difference when it comes to HD (from what I've seen) as it is a completely different animal than DV and looks great on 35mm and looks great transfered from that to home DVD. But it's all part of Lucas' big whole take over the film industry with digital technology push. "THX certified theatres" and all that bullshit.

yeah, but here's why: what happens on this board over and over again is that somebody makes a general statement, somebody repeats it without having first hand experience, and so on and all of a sudden it's common knowledge. i don't think there's a single place in the world where you can get as many pieces of advice that sounds like truth when it's really just somebody's general and broad idea or suggestion, and i've made it my mission to fight it. ;-)
There was a discussion going on some time ago on a 16mm forum discussing Attack of the Clones. These people had seen the movie both at a traditonal film cinema and at a digital cinema. They all agreed that the film looked best projected at the digital cinema. By the way, this particular thread was started by a film projectionist. I have to admit, when I saw the film at a film cinema, I was disappointed a little by the qaulity of the opening scene. Close ups of faces seemed to look slightly soft. Strangley, this didn't seem as evident in the rest of the film...maybe I just got used to it.
I'm glad Lucas is pushing the 'entirely digital' thing and trying to force theaters to his way of thinking. His movies suck and will continue to suck as long as he spends all his energy on technology and forgets to tell a good story. This will make theaters reluctant to throw away their 35mm projectors to make room for the $thousands and $thousands required to equip their theaters. I just don't think that 2-screen movie house in Palmyra Wisconsin is ready for the investment. I've got nothing against digital stuff (In fact, it 's already helping super 8) but I just wish there was a better spokesperson.
