shooting music video and sync sound with super 8 and DAT?

Post by schmowndrow »

Hi there,

I have a question about shooting MOS and sync-sound footage with the
Braun Nizo 801macro, and 481macro. I don't have either of these cameras
yet, but I would like to buy one. Before I do:

Scenario 1:
If I were to shoot footage of people lip-synching to music without
pilotone or any sort of sync other than a slate clap at the head of a
shot, how long can I reasonably expect a take to be in sync with either
of the above cameras? Obviously, pilotone doesn't help me, as I'm
working from a fixed-speed sound source (betaSP playback or DAT, etc.)
I would be transferring the super8 film to BetaSP with TC, and then
taking the sound off CD, (or from the BetaSP I used on the shooting day
for playback), and resyncing in a computer editing program.

Scenario 2:
Essentially the same thing as above; no pilotone connecting the camera
and recording system, but this time shooting film with a blimped super8,
and recording location dialogue with a DAT or minidisc, and slating at
the head of each take, then trying to sync up sound and picture with the
computer at the end.

Am I looking at takes of seconds only, or can I expect something on the
order of a minute to stay in sync. I'd rather not get into fiddling
with pitch-shifting the audio in the computer around if I don't have to.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I had some good experiences with the second alternative, although shots were up to 20 seconds. didn't pitch anything, but mostly cut away pauses in speeches (mostly of less than a second length) and sometimes had to add a few frames of room noise (insert pauses). A lot of work, but it worked. Most of my shots went out of sync after 10 to 15 seconds or so (beaulieu 5008).

There are more alternatives like crystal syncing your camera at 24 fps exactly at the filmgroup (see ttp://members.aol.com/fmgp/ ) or search the forum and newsgroups for super 8 with the search function on this subject. I'm sure people on this forum will respond as well here.

By the way, this is a good shop for buying your camera:

You can mail them in english.

I forgot to say that I used an analogue recorder and not a minidisc or dat recorder, wich even complicated things for me then. But still it works. Btw, if your camera's speed is stable, don't forget this can be destroyed by a telecine with an unstable projector. Rank transfers don't have this problem nor do moviestuffs transfers have (http://www.moviestuff.tv)
