What is the very best super 8 camera ever been produced ?

Post by vanderVelden »

Hi,

I would like to find out what according your experience is the very best super8 camera that has ever been built. Sharpness of the lens and durability are very important in this question. So, what is your opinion?

Without a doubt it is the Canon 1014E

( Imagine this being said with an Arnold Schwarzenegger accent)

I think maybe if the 1014 XLS could shoot at 54 fps and had a frame counter It would be number one - YA!

Bump that to 72FPS and I'd agree.
Oh, and add interchangeable lenses.

The problem with the question, is that it's nearly impossible to answer.

Sorry but Beaulieus are complete hypes and jokes in this league.

Questionable build quality
Questionable optics
Questionable reliability
Very vulnerable lens mounts
Partly manufacturing errors on some models
Completely useless internal exposure control.

Check out Martin Baumgarten´s Site:
http://lavender.fortunecity.com/lavende ... ulieu.html
Compare the meter readings the camera provides you with those of a
reliable hand-held light meter, to make sure it's accurate. As these
cameras age, it is quite common for the metering system to begin to
lose accuracy, the galvanometer (meter needle) to become inactive, and
for the automatic reglomatic system which drives the lens aperture to
become sluggish and/or not work properly. It is often best to use the
camera in manual mode anyhow, just as you would any professional
camera. It also has a tendancy to vary the exposure somewhat when set
to automatic or manual when in non- running mode as compared to when
it's in operation. This is due to the guillotine shutter interferring
with the meter reading, and cutting down some of the light the meter
receives.

Also, try to avoid using the camera in automatic when shooting any
slower than normal speed, since the shutter system will severely begin
to affect the auto-exposure mode.
What left? 72 unexposed fps.

I am sure Bjørn Andersson can rectify many of the errors but some are built in the design and not possible to rectify.

Best thing: Very simple design and even EJM may lube them (to some extent)

Answer to last question: TOYOTA
Response to S8 booseter: Agree, Beaulieu is a fragile camera

My additional coments: You just can't beat Japanese Engineering!

I hope by mentioning 72fps and interchangeable lenses nobody thought I was saying Beaulieus are the best.
I was saying if the 1014XL-s had these features, then for me it would win, hands down. As it is, there's no perfect S8 camera in my eyes.`

I like Beaulieus. I'd buy all I could find for $100.

But I also like the Nikons, and the Canon 814E is the only one I kept last year during my "purge"

Oh, that and all of my Minolta XL-400s. ;)

BTW- I'd lke to find a good place to get my movie cameras "checked out" and stuff. Anyone know anywhere in on or arounf the SF bay area?

High-End Japanese Engineering rules! :!:

Once (can not re-find it - sorry) I saw on a japanese site some guys over there modifyning ´a´japanese S8 cam to accept modern High End PRO video lenses. Now, would there be a big difference betwen a RGB or a viewfinder/exposure control beamsplitter  :?:

Might have been a Fujika (Japanese yes) Dunno.

Fujika ZC1000 might be the best S8 cam never built
If someone could simplify that film stock issue with the Single8 cartridge system it would be something?

I would go with a Bolex RX4 DS8 w/ 3 switars as "the best". It has sooo many options and full service is available. The Fujica ZC1000 I'm sure is awesome too. Elmo also had 2 cameras, the 612R and 1018R, which have top notch specs but are very rare.

Ditto! The Bolex DS8 is great, but heavy and you can shoot sync with the ESM motor and a tobin crystal. Plus soon you will have any film that is available in 35mm (as soon as I finsh the machine). The future of DS8 looks bright! I would also add the Canon DS8, 100% backwinde, fast 54 fps slomo, nice f 1.4 zoom lens, but heavy and loud....

Back in the day Canon proposed a Super 8mm camera that was a 20 to 1 zoom ratio. A prototype was made and it made an appearence at one of the then camera shows. Unfortunately, It never went into production. What that camera would have been-Ya!
