New Super8 filmstock: Provia 400, ready to order

Post by black_angus1 »

Hi all,

The latest round of custom Super8 cartridges, consisting of Velvia 50D and Provia 100D, have all been manufactured and shipped to the buyers.

Next up, I have a roll of Provia 400 film ready to be slit and perforated and loaded into Super 8 cartridges.

Provia 400 is a reversal film, something like a super-ultra Kodachrome. Its speed is 400 ASA. Fuji describes it as "Exceptionally Fine Grain, Superb Color Reproduction, Push-Processing Capability to ISO 1600". You can read more about it here:
http://www.fujifilm.com/JSP/fuji/epartn ... ct=2301946

The raw film is very expensive, so these cartridges are more expensive than the other stocks. Each Provia 400 cartridge costs $47, which includes processing.

This is the first time ever that this filmstock has been made available to Super 8 users, and there are only going to be six cartridges. One is already paid for. I have a verbal order on three more, but that still needs to be confirmed and prepaid. So, if you want to get one of these extremely rare, very fast Super 8 cartridges, please let me know right away.

So what you're saying is this is some sort of "testing phase?" Is Fuji thinking of entering the Super 8 market? Or, did you or someone you know just talk them into a special order? I'm not sure I would be interested right now, because of the price, but if they start making them in batches, and the price drops, then maybe.

No, Fuji is not entering the market, this is a one-time special order. We've done this before with Velvia and Provia 100, this is the first time it's been offered with Provia 400.

Pro8mm will also make custom loads of 5285 Ektachrome 100D, but they require a minimum order of 24 cartridges, at $50 each. We're using 100' loads so we can make minimum orders of 6 cartridges (Pro8mm gets three strips of 8mm film out of every foot of 35mm film, so 100' yields three batches of 50' strips, for six cartridges).

There may never be another order of Provia 400. But if enough people want it, there may.

As of now, four of the cartridges are spoken for, leaving two available.
