Copying Super8 with Nikon D3100

Post by alexmuir »

I've been asked to prepare some of my Super8 family movies for showing at a Birthday party in two weeks. I have a Eumig 601 projector and a simple box type device for copying with a camera. I set up a Nikon D3100 in video mode to record the projected image. A number of the sequences in the recording have solid horizontal black bands running down the screen. The films were made on a variety of Super8 cameras. Can anyone tell me what causes this, and if it can be avoided. The films were projected at 18fps, and the D3100 seems to record at 30fps. The highest available projection speed is 24fps. The films all look fine when projected on screen with the Eumig 601.
Thanks for any advice/suggestions.
Alex.

The problem is a frame rate disparity between your camera and projector. Solution is to use a different projector that has variable speed rather than your fixed speed projector. Also specially designed "telecine" projectors have a five-blade shutter that would help eliminate flicker. You could also look for a different camera that has a frame rate available to match your projector speed. If nothing else, take it to a local transfer facility and have them do a proper transfer for you.

If time and money is an issue for you, simply bring your film projector to the birthday party and project the films like in the old days. :-)

I just looked up the specs on your Nikon D3100 and noticed it does have 24fps speed on it. I looked up the specs on the Eumig 601 and see it only has 18fps but you mentioned you can do 24fps. If that's the case, set the camera and projector both on 24fps.

David, many thanks for taking time to reply. The projector definitely has 24 fps. I could only see 30fps on the camera, but it's not mine, and I haven't had a very close look at it. I will check it out and see if I can get both in sync. I had thought about using a professional service, but there's too much editing required. Projection at the venue will be best accomplished electronically, so a card or disc will be required. There's still time to redo it in proper sync if I get to work now. Thanks again,
Alex
