Syncing sound to camera noise?

Post by Bjarne Eldhuset »

I am making a little movie for the Straight 8 festival, where you shoot 1 cartridge without editing afterwards, and make the soundtrack without being able to see the film.

The sound for the movie will all be done in post, as a voiceover. There are no people in the film. I have a list of 25 short scenes., which will all be shot in screening order.

If I record the noise from the camera, place it in a audio editing software, and edit this to fit the exact moment camera noise starts and stops for each scene, do you think I can use this to sync the voiceover to each scene almost perfectly?

hi bjarne,

it depends on your camera - a lot of them won't run at exactly 18fps. this is why you see so many straight 8 films that the sound doesn't quite sync to. try posting in the straight 8 entrants facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1664249947161006/

there are quite a few veterans of straight 8 there who all proabbly have different ways of doing things.

I find this a good idea. With a little practice you might come as close as to two frames or one.
