Playback speed for frame by frame capture

I have now captured a regular 8mm film with my Workprinter XP and I now have an AVI file with all the individual images. Can anyone tell me what me what speed adjustment this needs to be set up to in my NLE program? (PAL).
Running the file as captured seems to be slightly fast.

It depends on what frame rate you shot the film. What NLE are you using? There should be some option in which to specify the frame rate of your source. So if you shot the source at 18fps then you'd select 18fps as the frame rate for your source. The NLE will then adjust the playback to work within whatever frame rate your output format uses, eg. the output format might be 25 fps, so the NLE will do the necessary correction between 18 and 25.

I don't know what the frame rate it was shot at as it's over 50 years old but being regular 8mm film I would guess it was probably 16fps. I'm using Sony Vegas platinum 9 as my NLE.

Some NLE's are a pain when it comes to frame rates as they will often automatically try to interpolate (in one of several ways) source files to the project frame rate. If you just want to first of all see what looks right, then use the avifrate utility (http://www.am-soft.ru/avifrate.html ) to stamp the avi with the rate you think it should be and then play the file in a media player to check it out.

If you captured with CineCap, it has a built in speed conversion function. All you do is select the speed you wish and then process. It will produce a second set of files with the correct pull down pattern for your desired frame rate.

If you are on a NLE and want to slow it down from the 25fps rate, just use a speed reduction of 28% to run at 18fps and 36% to hit 16fps. To prevent interpolation of frames, turn off frame blending on your clips.

I've tried to download the avifrate software but my virus checker deemed it unsafe and firefox didn't like the download page.

Strange, my checker and browser have no problems with it and it is a well known utility that has been around for many years. Sometimes I think virus checkers (in their bona-fide bid to thwart the baddies) can be more of a pain than a virus!

Thanks, I have an old pc which I hardly use so I'll try again with that.

On a different note my Workprinter XP came with an USB mouse and I've read on this site it's better to use a PS2 mouse. I have a PS2 adaptor with a mouse sign on it, is it OK to use that.
