8mm splicer

Post by nichos »

I hope this is the right forum for this.

I bought this "...vintage 8mm film bauer schmalfilm-klebepresse film splicer...." with no instructions how to use it, can anybody help?

I used to splice years ago using the wife's nail polish remover.

I tried it now on a bit of film & it does not stick. Maybe the modern acetones are different?. .....thanx ......nick

If you're trying to splice polyester film with cement it won't work. The way to tell polyester film from acetate is the polyester will barely have any curl if it's hanging loose. Acetate will curl up on itself. With that splicer you need to scrape the emulsion off one end then attach the non-emulsion side Of the other piece to it. You can tell that the emulsion is scraped off because it will become clear. The emulsion side has less shine than the non-emulsion side.

Are you using nail polish or proper film cement? I have read that you can make film cement by dissolving some pieces of film leader in acetone. I think there are instructions on the internet somewhere. I don't think acetone will work by itself. Kodak film cement is still available.
