EK = Eastman Kodak

Perfing and spooling will be done by the awesome guys at Wittner.

I hope Kodak are willing to play along!
If they do, it will be the first time I have heard of Kodak supplying unperforated film and also the first one of these kinds of novel proposals involving Kodak to work. Earlier this year I spent a lot of time trying to get an order of 16 mm hi con made. Kodak were willing to discuss it. The moq however was just under $50,000. We had to buy 80 x 2000 foot rolls (In fact it was 400 x 400 foot). . It wasn't the volume of rolls that made it not work. Rather it was the price. The price they offered was just so much higher than the last list price for that stock.
Good luck with it. It's a fine idea. It SHOULD be possible

At the time of my request, nobody but Kodak could do DS8 perfing.
Unperforated rolls should certainly entail lower finishing costs (you would think)....

Good luck with your project,
Jean-Louis
Some years ago I enquired with Wittner to learn if they would keep DS-8 rolls in their catalog.
They stated they would have it as long as Kodak would be making S-8.
Kodak uses DS-8 long-rolls as an intermediate product and getting some of these would be easy.
I suppose it is still true but Wittner has still abandoned almost all DS-8 materials
and certainly don't supply Kodak materials in DS-8. Either there are no buyers
or it isn't so easy.

How difficult could it be to just take a number of the long-rolls of a stack of cans with unperferated or DS-8 film.
Is some beancounter thinking it is too complicated?
Kind regards,

André

The good news about doing a large 50D order is that the stock lasts for a very long time. 500T not so much, but 50D will have a very long shelf life in the fridge or freezer. You could be selling it for 5 or 6 years no problem, probably much longer with only a slight degradation. Or people that order it can store it for that long so it's a good investment.

George Eastman delivered motion-picture stock unperforated for many years. I think it was only after WWI that the company switched to perforated-only stock. It seems to have something to do with the relation to the Bell & Howell Co. Now, since BH no longer dictates technics on EK, the latter might pick up back rationality.

But since almost no one is building cameras or processing machines anymore and since practically all of the existing equipment kinda needs perfs, why in the world would they not produce film with perfs unless someone asked and paid for it that way?

I'd like to use Vision3 50D and 250D (maybe even Vision 500!) on my Bolex H8. I hope everything goes well, I'm sure a buyer. :)

This project seems to be moving forward. I'll know for sure once I've received an order confirmation and paid EK -- for more film than I thought I'd ever buy in one order :-/

I don't know how often they slit master sheets. It could potentially be a long wait for some emulsions. I imagine they sell more 250d than 50d and more 50d than TXR. I don't know where to put print film on that line.

Thank you for the update, Dennis. I would love to shoot some V3 50D in the UP8 format once again.

I imagine the price for a 25' roll of regular 8, on a daylight spool and in a taped can will run about $40. I'm sure that's much more than expected. A 100' roll of regular 8 on a daylight spool, in a taped can, would be about $65-80. Does this kill the limited interest which has been expressed here? Just wondering.

If I offer film, processing and a best light workprint as a package, I will likely have to charge about $75-90 for 25' roll (50' of 8mm). That's pretty steep. But it's like having reversal film again. The turnaround time would be a couple weeks, and the process would occur on specific dates, maybe once a month or maybe every n months. So you might have to wait a month for a batch to start, and then two more weeks to receive the results. What do people think about that?

I know some of you have your own scanners, and probably would prefer just to receive a negative and scan it. Would you want the negative slit or unslit? Once slit, it would not be possible to make a print.

Good news, Dennis!

I'd like only film + development, because then I would bring positive, because I want use the film only for projection and not for pc use (of course, I always do it anyway after, at home, sure).

I accept also the proposal ONLY film, and making do the rest to other laboratories here in Europe.

Great news, Dennis. The 100ft R8 price is a bit high but I understand the expense involved and the razor thin " profit" margin. LIFT use to recently stock 100ft R8 E100D for approximately $56-60 CAN so your suggested pricing is not stratospheric. My preference is for the film stock only as I have numerous local resources for processing and scanning.

Who will be perfing the film? I once ran some 8mm wittner 50d (velvia) through the camera and the QC of the perf was dire.
So I would purchase stock, only if Kodak carry out the perfing.
