Sticky Rollers

Does anyone use particle transfer rollers, AKA sticky rollers to clean film? Or know where to get a setup? I think Kodak still sells the rollers in bulk, but not the assembly. They were designed by the late John Pytlak, I believe, former board member and Kodak scientist. It would be the ideal way to clean spools of film, but I can't find much out there. Maybe someone has a setup they can share, or some product info?

Yes, we use them all the time.There are 1.5 inch and 3 inch PTRs. They are available from Kodak. See here, page 45:

They last a long time if cleaned well. We don't have any spares now, but perhaps someone here would like to join you in a purchase?

Ya know, I was at one time thinking about those rollers. But heard that short term it's ok but long term is bad for the film because the sticky stuff from the rollers gets on the film and makes it very easy for dust to stick to it. Have you used these for a long time?

Had them for years. Not a problem at all. Besides, they are not sticky like that scotch tape, more like a soft piece of rubber.

Nice! Does it seem to take more dirt off the emulsion side? I've got a 16mm projector with those 4 rubber rollers, all the rollers are currently new so I try to keep them that way by cleaning them with a wet q-tip after every film or 2. This must have the same effect to a smaller degree.

Thank you Andreas- Happy to see the rollers are still available. Kodak no longer makes or sells a spindle assembly. Are you using the old spindle set-up or did you fab something? I'll probably need to fab something but don't know where to start. Could you post a pic of your assembly sometime?

Slash- I've never had one in front of me, but i believe the material is like one of those stretchy, sticky kids toys. They grab on to dirt very well, are non abrasive to the film, then you just rinse them under the faucet .

Thanks Andreas, thanks T-scan! Can someone please tell me about when it's more appropriate to use sticky rollers, and when it's more appropriate to use rolls of media cleaning pads on a machine like the "Film-O-Clean"?
