And now for something completely different...a Keystone K8

Post by silverhalide »

I bought a Prius load of old 8mm gear from a fellow in KS. I was most fascinated with the Bolex 150 macro and the 1936 Keystone 8mm.

I shot a roll with the Keystone and posted it on Youtube:

The camera was kind of rusty on the outside and hadn't been serviced for a long time. The lens was fixed focus and looked really crummy. Yet it produced these images. I think that's pretty darn cool.

Nice! Does the film go through a sprocket wheel before and after the gate or no?

Nope, no sprocket wheel at all. The film path is:

spool
peg
gate
peg
spool

I imagine the registration would be much better if it had a sprocket wheel! The poor claw has to rip that film out of the spool's hands all on its own.

I see. Did you scratch the film with your camera or projector? Looks like it's on the base side so at least it's possible to fix. What are those waves moving upwards in all the dark area's? That's not on the actual film is it? That happened when you transferred it?

I haven't projected it yet. I imagine the camera did a great job of scratching the film. The waves are the inexpensive ($9.95) telecine.
