Canon Motor Zoom8 EEE help

Hi All,
I have a Canon Motor Zoom8 EEE that I would love to start using. I filled the battery cartridge with AAs but the motor and zoom don't seem to turn on. I haven't yet tracked down the battery solution for the light meter but I wouldn't think that would effect the rest of the camera.
Any thoughts on how I can get this working?
Either what might be wrong or where I can turn to get it fixed?
