My first forays into Super 8

Post by urbanalbertan »

Hello!

I'm quite new to Super 8, but it's a fascinating hobby and I thought I'd share my early results with the forum from which I have learned so much!

My camera is a Sankyo MF 303. It is in good working order. I do not have the instructions for it, so I learned as I went. The inside of the camera seems to suggest that it works best with 25D - 100D or 40T - 160T film speeds. My first two Super 8 cartridges were used for testing the camera.
The first film was Kodak 7203 film, which is 50D film, almost in the middle of the suggested range of the camera. I tried it out at different exposures and found out it was generally underexposed for indoor filming, but quite good for the outdoors. It looked somewhat washed out in the scan I got. I also discovered, the hard way, that it was negative film when I tried to play it in my projector! My roommate and I got a good laugh at that.

My second film was Agfa 200D reversal film, bought specifically so I could play it on my projector. It was a bit better for indoor shots, and very good for all lighting conditions outside (overcast, sunny, shade, direct sun). It was noticeably grainier than the 7203 film as well, but still acceptable.

My next film is Kodak 7213 negative film. I'm curious to see how it looks indoors. I'll also be aiming for a little more art in my film adventures, rather than testing.

I would like to say thank you to all the posters in this forum for being there as I stumble my way through the world of Super 8!

With the negative films, the flatness of a scan is a good starting point because they are designed for grading digitally, unlike reversal film. So there is a wide range of looks you can apply to the negative films after they are scanned, once you get the hang of it. The 200T is very versatile since it does good in daylight and artificial, just make sure the filter switch is on the right setting.
