Can I get my WorkprinterHD to work on a 64bit system?

Post by gaugefilm »

Hi everyone,

As you may well know we've had our WorkprinterHD for approaching 2 years now (next April) and we've altered it to the extent that it stopped being a Workprinter a long time ago. Actually I would say it out scans a Sniper now since we can use purely optical zoom from our camera. I'm currently editing together a side by side comparison video... pitting the new Muller service against the old more affordable Workprinter service. I have to say the modified workprinter holds up pretty darn good considering... obviously it's never going to beat the mighty 2k Muller scans but as a cheap scanning service it really does make sense to keep it running for out customers on a budget. Stay tuned for the video which will come after Christmas.

The huge disadvantage the Workprinter has is it has to run in conjunction with a 32bit operating system because of the Velocity software. Now this really restricts the workprinter. So much so that we only offer raw still scans or raw PAL AVI's straight from the velocity software itself (we no longer edit the files). The main reason for this is because the 32bit system really restricts the computers ability to be a HD editing computer. Also Roger specifically told us not to instal any other programs on the workprinter computer because if might interfere with Velocity. So to cut a long story short, in order to do any post work in our editor we have to transfer files over to our editing computer which takes a long, long time. Even with a direct USB link between computers Sill Image Sequences take hours.

So I'm curious... is it possible to set the workprinter up on my editing computer using different software somehow? Eventually when the workprinter packs up we'll invest in a Retro as a budget option for our customers. At that point we'll be able to use the retro software on our editing computer no problem and budget edited scans will return. Although the lack of true 1080 puts me off the Retro a little (fingers crossed an upgraded version comes out to support 1080 without having to upscale from 720, Roger?). Anyway back to the point... Is there anyway we can run the Workprinter with different software (or the same software) on a 64bit computer? Since the workprinter scans are so good it would be brilliant if we could run it on our editing computer for both speed and flexibility until it gives up the game. It's still going strong and the images we're getting out of it are better than ever so it makes total sense to attempt to get the scanner working in conjunction with a powerful PC.

Thanks in advance for help and advice.

Hi!

Unfortunately, there is no way to run Velocity on a 64 bit system nor will it run dependably on a 64 bit system in the 32 bit mode. But what you can do to expedite things is launch multiple instances of Velocity just for processing. All instances must be pointed to the same hard drive. Also, you must make sure that you have each instance set to the speed change tab of the software before launching the next instance. If you have the software on the capture tab and then launch another instance, it will lock things up and then you may have to reboot. But I have known customers that have run as many as three instances of the Velocity software during processing, which can cut the processing time down exponentially, especially if you have a multi core processor. What you don't want to do is have the same customer folder being processed on two instances. So you would want, say, "Smith" being processed by one instance and "Jones" being processed by another instance. All will appear on the same drive. If you export to an external fire wire or USB-3 G-RAID, then you don't have to transfer files at all after processing. Just let the files process to the G-RAID, then the next morning unplug the G-RAID and move it over to your 64 bit edit PC and edit right off the drive, which should work fine.

Hi Roger,

I actually have a G-RAID sitting idle on my desk from my Mac days. I'll give it a go! Thanks Roger, perfect solution!

Make sure that your G-RAID is formatted for PC and not MAC. ;)

Haha, I'll try and remember to reformat it. Thanks again.
