Help support Matthew Eppler's Kinograph project

Post by chrisgavin »

Dear all,

You probably all know about Matthew Epler's Kinograph project to bring affordable and open source film scanning to the world.
Well he's now in a campaign on to win some development support for a year from the NYC Next Top Makers scheme.

It seems all we have to do is visit this link and give him a vote using the button at the top left of the page...
https://www.nexttopmakers.com/maker/kinograph

It doesn't cost anything to vote for him and it might just help him get closer to his goal.
He's now talking of working on an affordable 8mm film scanner first, and has released a new video with further details of his efforts...

Seems to me this is worth a few supportive clicks. : )

I've voted for Kinograph.

An 8mm version for under $300 is a pretty good idea. But of course, many people have been building DIY film-2-digital systems for quite a while now. There's nothing intrinsically novel about Matt's setup. Although the multi-format head might be a candidate for such. A downside of the head (especially for valuable archive material) is that it's sprocket based.

And what is this very recent thread showing us if not what is effectively an 8mm "Kinograph" already built and open sourced:

But Kinograph isn't really technology. As Matt himself says: he's not an engineer.

Kinograph is really a concept. And the concept is the unearthing of forgotten film collections and making such available digitally (online) in a cost efficient way. The concept has it's roots in Matt's experience's in Jordan. There is a specific back story there. And there's a social mission that springs from such, with an initial focus on NYC. Whether that's achieved using Matt's prototype designs, or some other design doesn't really matter.

So that's why I'm voting for Matt. For the concept.

Hi Carl,

Yes, I think any effort along this line is worthwhile and to be supported.
My own film-scanning efforts have been put on hold now, (I don't seem to have any 'spare' time to devote to this anymore).

I got far enough down the road to at least appreciate the issues involved and I really do applaud any efforts and advances people do make.

If Mr. Epler or anyone else does make the sub $300 8mm scanner (that works!) I might be tempted to get back in the game.
Thanks for the link too, I missed that one; great to see someone trying out the Raspberry Pi camera for this.

Best Wishes,
Chris

Neat setup.

Have just been scanning some 16mm film on my own setup and everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Have to redo the entire thing. But where it worked it worked great.
