Super 8 transfer to MiniDV
Hi guys,
ok, Ive gotten 3 processed films back from kodak so far, Ive bought a projector and filmed with a 3CCD camcorder of the wall to transfer it over to DV. Ive always watched out so the white balance/gain and everything else is correct with the super8, but I feel I need more then this. It aint giving me the result I want. I live in Norway and I want to get my super8 footage professionaly transferd to DV so that i get the best results possible. My question is were and how much?
I know Andres have somehting going on, but the poor guy I am I cant afford that. So if there is anyone here from USA I would have no problem shipping It over and get It transferd there!
Any help would be good and maybe some tips for me If i should happen to transfer for film with the "filming of wall" method.

Hello Marius.
A very good and economic result I have seen is a traditional setup like this: http://www.filmshooting.com/telecine/index.php DIY telecine.
The transfers I have seen were filmed off a white screen (In Norwegian Perlemor screen - do not know the english name) and capturing live with a Panasonic single chip DV cam. An ordinary projector is used to project the film onto the screen and the DV cam records it off the screen.
The films I have seen transferred with the Panasonic cam are really superb and totally flicker free. I am not sure which cam model was used but I can check.
Also - if you can borrow or rent this cam - check post/link too: Canon XM2 You will get flicker free transfers with really good quality with some practice.
Give it a shot.

Thanks, he does things different then I have done. Maybe my problem is there. Ive used to have the prosjector about 2meter or more from the wall. I set the WB, shutter on the camcorder and place it on a tripod as close as possible. ive never connected to any tv, should try that.
So next time I should get close, like 0,5m from the wall and smack up a peace of A4 white paper to project the image on and film off.

I used to project onto a slide screen and copy from there. But using
the piece of paper trick close to the wall brought major quality
improvements. Unless you have a variable speed projecter you won't
be able to get rid of all the flicker but it can be greatly reduced by
adjusting your cameras shutter speed.

Ok, what shutter speed do u recomend? I guess the lower the best right? I think Im gonne go for a 1/50 shutter. And u should have the gain/exposure on manual so the light dosent suddenly change....?!
Why is it better to be close to the wall? Oh, and why does projectors were u can choose playback speed work better? Whats the best frame rate to play back on?
Thanks

Here is one projector model which is excellent for video transfer;
BAUER Serie T280 AV MULTIFORMAT / DUOPLAY
It will do about anything and can be fine-adjusted from 15 to 26 fps to eliminate flicker. Additionally it runs both S8 and N8 (R8 ) films - hey you could start your tansfer company! :!:

Also some Pansonic and Canon Models will do as mantioned before.

About the Video cams I do not know but if you got your hands on a VX2000 :?: there should be enough option sto eliminate the flikcer there as well.BAUER Serie T280 AV MULTIFORMAT / DUOPLAY

I bought a cheap projector, Porst Syncroton S8, 60 euros or something. With that projector you can adjust speed from few frames per second to over 26fps... I also use HAMA telescreen (bought from Wittner) and Sony 8100 D8 one chip camera, this combination gives flicker free transfers. But I'm still loosing sharpess and those great colours of S8, maybe some other DV camera would give me a better quality...
Here is one sample I made last spring...

You may be luckier than you know of. A friend of mine has this projector and a beautiful screen for transfers and may do the job for free for you. He is a TRUE S8 enthusiast. If you can get hold of a good DV cam for this job the result may be -- very good actually.Marius wrote:That looks great, Im not near to owning that kind of money though, hehe.
Buy hey S8 Booster, if its not much trouble, maybe u could help me out one time? U got a good projector? i would really like to know more about super8 to. How long have u worked or had super8 as a hobby?
How soon do you need the transfer?
I have been into super8 for considerably more than 20 years now.

Ok, Marius.
If your VX2000 fails to cope with this I´d be very surprised.
Just give me a little time to ask the guy and after that I will send you a PM to proceed. I am pretty sure it will work ut.
