Hello,
I am shooting a film end of March on S16mm. We want to crop it to 2.35 in post.
Can you advise on loss of quality?
Thank you,

Re: s16mm crop 2.35
I would do it in Ultra 16mm then file the gate even wider than the 1.85 to 1 ratio.

If widening the Ultra-16 gate more, beware of the film manufacturer's ID mark, a faint number that occurs every foot or so, at least it does with E100. Perhaps though with Super-16 widened more between the perfs, there is just enough image to produce 2.35:1 ratio ?

Just took a look at a processed roll of Tri-x and it has the same problem, would only be able to use a small amount more of the sprocketed side. Guess you'd have to find the right film if anyone makes such a thing.doug wrote:If widening the Ultra-16 gate more, beware of the film manufacturer's ID mark, a faint number that occurs every foot or so, at least it does with E100. Yes it is a problem these film numbers. Don't understand why the manufacturer has to do this to us. However, I recently looked at some processed 16mm Wittnerchrome 200D, and couldn't see any marks at all !
Sorry folks, I realise this is going technical so should be really on the other forum ?

Re: s16mm crop 2.35
That's good news! Now I wonder if using c-mount lenses meant for super 16 would be wide enough for such filming, or if you should just forget it and make a mount that can take lenses for a 35mm camera?doug wrote:Yes it is a problem these film numbers. Anais,
Cropping will waste film leaving roughly 1/2 unused. Have you heard of UltraPan8 which utilizes the full 16mm width of R8 film with classic 8mm pulldown producing a native aspect ratio of 1:2.8? It is a native optical hybrid system utilizing Bolex cameras. Eighty UP8 frames are exposed per 16mm foot as opposed to only 40 standard 16mm frames. Which also effectively doubles run time per 100 ft film loads. Think of it as "2 perf 16mm".
Here are some examples, i.e.

You can easily crop for the 2.35 aspect ratio if you so desire.

I was waiting for Nicholas to get in on the act  Global UP8 domination his aim
How about that idea of using 16mm film and going further left and right between the perfs ? Folks have done it before, and maybe the system should be revived. But as I said earlier I think, it all depends on the film manufacturer's latent numbers it insists on printing. Except it seems Wittner ? Take a look at
