Machine Vision Camera

Post by Pj »

I have now almost completed building my frame by frame telecine, it has taken me a while, I have wanted something which can transfer my Super 8, my 16mm and even 35mm. I am using a Machine Vision Camera DFK 41BF02 from The Imaging Source with a Schneider S Componon 50mm enlarger lens [reveresed mounted] and am getting good results from my tests. I am aware that this camera has limitations but I am not sure which machine vision camera I should finally upgrade to.

Simple answer....... Are you happy with the results you are getting? If you are, then you don't need to upgrade for the sake of it.
If you are not, have you tried simple post processing to get acceptable results?

"Better" specified equipment does not necessarily produce better results and it is all too easy to keep haemorrhaging money trying different equipment...... and finishing up with no better result. I know..I've done it!
Marginal "improvement" versus extra cost: the classic exponential curve.

Ha ha yes.

I've spent quite a bit of money on elaborating transfer systems. In terms of results each new investment has given technically better results than the previous but there's always new ideas that happen, requiring more investment in terms of money. Its never ending.

I've managed to sort of work my way out of this by changing direction slightly. Instead of asking of the results if they can be technically better I just assume the answer will always be yes, so no more need to put in any more money in to find out!

I ask a different question now. Given the results of any test, from the first to the last, what kind of work can I make with such. For example, if this lens gives soft corners then what kind of work can I make with a soft corner lens. Or if that algorithm makes someone's face look like it's infected with a hoard of alien maggots then what kind of film can I make with that.

I recently acquired a 4K computer screen to do print backs (to film) of 4K transfers (from film), which I'll be doing soon. Had to get a new computer to drive it. When looking at some of my first experimental 4K transfers of Super8, on this screen, it was just stunning. On a smaller res screen you are either looking at a cropped portion of the frame or looking at a lower definition display, neither of which do a 4K transfer justice. But when looking at the entire frame on a 4K screen you really get to see how good a 4K transfer can look. The grain of the film becomes so much finer (not as clumpy). It becomes a much more subtle texture through which the image becomes far more vivid and compelling. Its mesmerising.

Combined with some experimental algorithms I've been writing over the last few years I'm looking forward to printing such work back to film (16mm).
