WITTNER AGFA 200D R8/N8

Post by mr8mm »

Has anyone tried the new Wittnerchrome 200D in regular/normal 8 film?

Hi, I've seen it projected on a 30 by 40 cm screen using a Bauer T 520: Very nice and balanced colors, good skin tones and contrast and relatively sharp. Runs very smoothly in both camera and projector (no hint of jitter at least with handheld camera) but the grain is really too noticeable. Indeed it does have a quality of its own - perhaps a dream-like quality, if you will - but I don't think this stock can be used for general shooting. I'd really love it if they gave us a 50 ASA speed stock. Why 200?????

Why 200? It is standard stock for Aerial photography which comes from the Belgium factory of former AGFA. Mostly used in large format and where high speed is a requirement.

Just be glad they have these stocks and are selling. One question is if these are still in production or is everything from a warehouse? If it would really be sold by the kilometers they might see if they can tune the emulsion for ciné and small frame still photography.

Keep hope up for Ferrania and that they may find a distributor who doesn't up all prices to the max.
Kind regards,

André

I would love to shoot some. I have footage I shot of my kids filmed on 4-X B+W reversal R8. Twice the speed as the Agfa 200D and probably at least twice the grain size. It is beautiful in its own way and distinctive. The image quality is about so much more than just grain size. Not for everyone or every occasion certainly, but who wants a bunch of film stocks that all look alike? It sounds like a fine stock but with a lot of grain. My bet is that some beautiful films can be made with it that really sets them apart from the sterile "video" look...

David and aj I partly agree with you but in this case much of my equipment becomes useless: what's the use of the finest S/8 lenses with a film with so much grain? Of course it cannot resolve as many lines as E 100 D. True the beauty of images is not just about cleanliness and lack of grain but erring on the opposite side doesn't sound very sensible to me.

Maurizio I disagree with your equipment becoming useless. Your fine equipment will bring out the best that any film stock has to offer. I agree this film will have aspects (grain size) that may be a negative in general applications, but I am glad a color reversal film of any caliber is still available. Like you, I too wish for a great lower speed color reversal stock. I fell in love with E100D after losing Kodachrome, only to be crushed by E100D being discontinued... I hope some manufacturer will rise to the occasion... Until then, if Agfa 200D becomes available in R8 or DS8 (!) I will be very happy to shoot it and explore its capabilities.

David,

I suspect you missed the Wittner's recent announcement. They released Agfa 200D color reversal in R8 (polyester based). Close to $100 US for a 100ft roll (5 minutes). Development not included. i.e. http://www.wittner-cinetec.com/katalog/ ... _filmm.php

I see that Wittner now lists a 400 foot roll for 201 Euros.
That comes to a little less than $17.35 USD ($20 CAD) for 25 feet.

I would note that I shoot 100ft rolls regularly for a total running time of 5+ min in the UP8 format. I was paying approximately $54 per 100ft roll at LIFT for E100D. An increase of over $30-$40 per 100ft roll (69 EUR) for a grainier stock that is polyester based is not cheap. Development not included. This is more expensive than getting my single perf 16mm Kodak V3 color negative reperfed into R8 by Edward Nowill.

I didn't know that. I have never done business with Wittner, and I probably never will. When I can shoot 16mm UN54 for little more than half what it would cost me to shoot the same running time in R8mm from Wittner...
