Compare Super 8 Sound vs "Video" Sound On Equal Basis

Post by S8 Booster »

found this clip on the Tube where the guy who shot it seems to be very pleased with the sound recorded on the tape. no idea what video camera it was.

here is my S8 film of the exact same kind of plane the Mustang P51D:

you may notice the camera sound here and there but that is my mistake. i just hung the el-cheapo wired mike on my wrist pointing down but that was not a big success. normally id use the Canon Boom mike which isolated cam sound vey well.

now, which do you think is better of the 2? say no more, say no more ;)

The sound on the Super8 is great. The engine sounds in particular. On the video it sounds miles away. Piddly. On the Super8 it's in your face. A lot more real, if that's the right word. Grungier. Mechanical. More threatening. If the plane fell out of the sky in the Super8 you'd be feeling it in your nervous system. If the same happened on the video it would feel like some regrettable but forgettable news item.

yes, as it appears the S8 sound system does a far better job here but since we do not know any recording details for the video system / mike etc it is hard to make a real compare but i have always found analog taping more "beefy" in sound compared to Tape 8 and onwards. possibly there are tons of filters and circuits which "flatten" out the sound on consumer video cams.
my recorded file here was done using a dead cheap hand held mike - for reasons i can not recall but the original Canon Boom mike i would normaly use is way better so the sound could have been even better on my S8 clip.
the clip was shot at 18 fps. 24 fps would have sounded even better of course.

i just couldnt let go since the creator of the video clip thought the sound was so great but in my opinion it isnt :)

It's pretty obvious the S8 sound is better. Much greater dynamic range. The worst S8 mic from the 80's is better than the best built in mics of video cameras of the same era or even 1990's in my experience. They didn't really get good sound until high end Prosumer HI8. Most DV cams had Decent sound. Mine even makes great concert bootlegs with 16bit sound. Not sure what he was using, but kind of blah. Sounded if was on auto level control and muted out most of the dynamic range. Analog tape is still used to this day in many modern music masters for its' "analog tape compression" effect in balancing dynamic range and "rounding out" sound. Modern built vacuum-tube
(That's valve for you on the other side of the pond) pre-amps and compressors have the same effect. It's something that "digital" just can't do. Same as no Vegas plug in can truly duplicate 3600 frames of S8 glory. :D

Long live analog, long live film.

here is another example which i think the S8 sound is pretty good and "natural":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpmpDVZU2-4

this time it was shot using a Sankyo XL420S or something which had a slight sound problem (hissing sound and shutter rattle noise) but with those soud levels it doesent disturb too much.
