Beaulieu 1018 SX 8?

Post by vidwerk »

I couldn't find any stats on the Beaulieu 1018 SX 8 super 8 camera on
the super 8 list: http://www.kolumbus.fi/puistot/
It seems like it might be a cheaper model.
Does anyone know If this camera is any good for a beaulieu?

Thanks, Simon.

This is one of the models that was produced by Bell&Howell in Japan for Beaulieu in France. Thew made 1008, 1018 and 1028. This models has NOT a C-mount, and are a "cheaper" model.

If I'm not mistaken, the 1008/1018/1028/1068 are all slight variations of the same camera. It was manufactured by Chinon for Beaulieu (which shouldn't be all that surprising, Chinon made cameras for just about every manufacturer towards the end of the S8 era... even some Bolex models are rebadged Chinons). The 7-56 lens on the 1008 was also offered as the base lens on the 6008. It's not a bad camera at all, but it does lack the one feature the Beaulieus are most known for, which is interchangeable c-mount lenses.

There has not been any 1068 model from Beaulieu.
All 1008/1018/1028 parts has the Bell&Howell label on the boxes, it might have been Chinon that assembled them in Japan, but this is ony a academic question.
The lens to Beaulieu 6008 1,4/6,9-55 was made by Kowa and is far away from being the same as on 1008. 1,2/7-45.

I'm gussing Mr Andersson is an authority on this matter. I was trying to find out an answer to the question as to where the 1008 xl was built, in Japan obviously, but some sources state that it was bult by Chinon and others say Bell & Howell. Well the design layout looks very much like the Bell & Howell sound cameras.

Did Bell & Howell and Chinon own a factory together?

In those days we rather scoffed at Chinon cameras, sold at Dixons here in UK I believe. But they seem to have stood the test of time for reliability. I'm always testing S8 cameras but very rarely come across a Chinon that doesn't work properly. I have no experience with this Beaulieu but I wouldn't have thought they'd put their name on an inferior camera/lens.

Agreed, there are lots of good working Chinon cameras still around. However, I think that these Beaulieu cameras have more in common with the latter day Bell & Howell sound cameras.
