lens cleaning issue

Post by milesandjules »

I guys...this is actually a video camera problem.... there is some nasty marks on the lens of this sony fx1.....most of the time you dont see this in the footage but the last job we did you could, so time has come to ask you guys for help?

I have tried cleaning with a folded ripped tissue and hot breath but it doesn't help at all.....what else would work?

Im not even sure what the mark is from....the lens usually lives under a uv filter ...but it might be from me trying to transfer super 8 from years back and something has sprayed on the lens maybe.

the reason this looks blue is cause the sky is reflecting in it...but it highlights the mess on the lens.

so the second photo is of it at another angle where you cant really see the problem much.....but its there waiting for a bright scene to look noticeable.

So any recommendations would be helpful.

thanks miles

A dry clean cotton wear cloth and some patience usually does the trick.

Tip from either Canon or Nikon according to me soft disk.

Anyway worked for me when nothing else did.

Hi Miles,

you could try a lens cleaning solution (or even just window cleaner) which should remove temporary marks, but it actually looks like coating damage to me, probably from something having been spattered on the lens and not cleaned off. Salt spray, spittle, soft drink, sweat, lots of things will eat into lens coatings if left on there a while. Once damaged there's nothing you can do outside of having the element polished back and re-coated - which is an expensive procedure. Trying to scrub it off usually just makes it worse.

Using a lens hood or matte box to avoid getting direct light on the front element can help.

Hi guys

Im just reading your replys now. I still dont know what it was.....but the other day I reluctantly attacked it with cotton buds and isopropyl alcohol...and after about half an our of careful scrubbing I got it clean as a whistle.....so not sure if it was a half eaten coating on the lens....or something splattered on the lens......but its clean now and its got its protective uv filter on it now for protection. I compared it with the other fx1 and they look the same .....so I'm not sure what happened....

I'm usually careful with lenses.... just not on our most expensive cameras ha ha..

Use a lens-cleaning fluid dropped on a microfibre cloth and wipe in a circular motion.
