Weddings - don't forget your back up camera

Post by Patrick »

Fairly recently, I was filming my sister's wedding with a Canon 1014E. Now, Ive heard a number of times that it's standard practice for wedding photographers to have a back up camera just in case. Even so, I thought: "Naa nothing's going to happen to me." After all, Ive been using this camera since the late 90s and overall, it's been very reliable. Well, when the big day camera, guess what happened? The camera died. I started playing around with it, turning it off and on etc. to no avail. It seemed doomed. Then all of a sudden, it came back to life. I managed to do some filming during the day, mixing Ektachrome 100D and Tri-X. Then the camera died again in the afternoon. Luckily, I was also shooting video as well.

It was actually my sister's idea to use super 8 for the wedding as she wanted a retro / nostalgic look to the footage. And this was not a paid job - it was a freebie for family. Regardless - lesson learned - make sure you bring a back up camera to a wedding!

Btw, time for an avatar change. I'm sure many of you are tired of seeing my face so here's my right arm instead.
