Image Stabilization Software for Workprinter-HD
Hi all, I'm getting some intermittent judder on my transfers and wondered if anyone could suggest some good image stabilization software. Most people like the judder because it emulates the film aesthetic but I'd like to give my customers the option of silky smooth video if possible. Any suggestions for either window or mac. Ideally I want to batch all the files at once and let them all process overnight.
Look forward to hearing from you all.
Kevin

Re: Image Stabilization Software for Workprinter-HD
I'm thinking of a more specialized program, one that preferably works on a PC because thats what the telecine unit is running on. I'd also have to export to a codec other than universal AVI files that Velocity exports when using FCP (for example prores). I really just want to drag the Velocity AVI files into some software and keep them as AVI. With FCP I'd have to export to .mov of mess around exporting in compressor which will take too much time.
Any other suggestions?

I would think that most stabilization software would try to stabilize the camera movement more than the frame jitter. Maybe you can manually (on the computer) remove the worst frames of jitter to make it easier on the software too.

Ideally software that could lock in on just the sprocket hole would be perfect. I've been trying to use some image stabilization software tonight. It's a no go it just takes way to long (about 30 minutes for a 50ft film).

Edius has a very fast and effective stabilizer, just make sure to turn off everything (2D/3D rotate, stretch) other than Translate.
You will not likely lock onto sprocket holes with much degree of accuracy as these will have blurry edges due to flooding of the sensor if you have exposed the image area correctly. Besides, the sprocket hole adjacent to the frame isn't the one used in the camera or projector for pull down, there is usually an offset so you will still get some jitter due to uneven hole spacing. The stabiliser will have to work on the whole image and will as a consequence remove some camera shake. But does this matter? Purists might think so, but then they should think again about all the factors which produce jitter and decide which are "valid" and which are not. For example, showing the same film through two different projectors, or even several times through the same projector, will likely show a different amount of jitter each showing - so what is "correct"?

Off all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Deshaker for virtualdub is pretty good
http://www.guthspot.se/video/deshaker.htm
You can also do stabilisation in after effects - here's one tutorial that allows you to select a stable area in the background as reference

I know in After Effects you can localize what portion of the image is used for motion tracking/stabilization so that would probably work great as well as some of the other independent stabilization packages. It wouldn't be a one click type of thing; it would need some human attention to get it right but it would work.gaugefilm wrote:Ideally software that could lock in on just the sprocket hole would be perfect. You might have to remove some frames if there's a really big jump like you'd get from a projector transfer.
Final Cut's stabilization is more of an overall image average I thought...

You may want to try NewBlue Stabilizer, which is free for 14 days. Follow this link: http://newbluefx.com/product/stabilizer
Make sure you play both video clips (the large frame and the smaller one below).

Yeah after effects does it(tracking image stabilation....we use it all the time for getting rid of shaking tracking camera moves in stopmotion animation....just download the trial and you can use if for 3o days for free.
