Hi All,
Sleep Always is now viewable on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gih1zai ... e=youtu.be
Finally CC'd it, 10 years later. I also cut some footage that was too dark to properly crush the blacks. In one instance this moved the story along considerably faster! So I cut some more stuff that always made me squirm a bit. The film is about 4 minutes shorter....and looks infinitely better. So much so in fact that if you bought the "official" DVD and can prove it (Rick has the list), I will send you a DVD of the CC'd version gratis.
I'm currently looking into marrying the 5.1 surround tracks that we have to the picture as well. So you might want to wait for that....
Cheers! Feedback welcome! (The motion is a tick herky-jerky on my system so I'm interested to know if that's universal)
Mitch

Didn't notice any jerkiness except, of course, in the characters  I always thought "Sleep Always" was great.MitchPerkins wrote:Cheers! Feedback welcome! (The motion is a tick herky-jerky on my system so I'm interested to know if that's universal)Mitch

Well done Mitch - great to see it on youtube
I did the same thing with In My Image a while ago too - I think once these films reach the end of their commercial lifespan it's good to have them available out there in perpetuity just to push Super 8 along. I wonder if there are any other Super 8 features on youtube?
The colour correction looks good too - I did notice though you only uploaded it in 480P - was that a deliberate decision to keep the DVD's one notch higher in quality?

Re: Sleep Always on youtube
Thanks for the good words guys. It was fun to revisit the film and CC it. 84 views in 3 days, not too too bad. :)
I then brought the files into a 16:9 project, scaled the 5 major files to fit 16:9, and then placed cuts over each and every original cut, also finding the middle of every dissolve to cut at and recreated those too. As I went along I shifted each scene for optimal framing, mostly moving stuff to the right to hide vignetting. Any scene/shot that had a dissolve into or out of, had to have its neighbours shifted the same amount, or you could see the shift in the dissolve.
Once the full movie was CC'd and exported, I used MPEGstreamclip to make the MP4....well I made a bunch as I watched, tweaked, repeat. I chose highest quality and a 1250 data rate to get the file to approx. 800mb. Scale was 854X480, optimal for youtube.
I honestly don't know about 480p. I see it's there, but don't know if anything happens if you click on it :) Youtube compression did its thing. I find it looks great in the standard window sitting right in front of the screen, or fullscreen from a few feet away. The DVD's I intend to make will be higher quality visually than the official release, and with the addition of the 5.1 surround sound if I can make that happen. The official release went through a Betacam SP generation, then back to digital, so anything from the original MiniDV tapes is bound to look better, mostly the blacks aren't milky green-grey. Well they were a little milky but I crushed that out big time!
We still have all the camera original footage, so I did think of retransfering HD and re-cutting the film from scratch, but.....ah well, you know....
Mitch
I CC'd it by streaming in the original 5 MiniDV "reels" of about 15 minutes each, and marrying those to the sound from the DVD [it sync'd perfectly without a hitch]. There was some minor dropout, a green cast, and the xfer is blurry compared to what we do currently [I applied 25% sharpening to everything, which revealed some grain at least].Scotness wrote: I did notice though you only uploaded it in 480P - was that a deliberate decision to keep the DVD's one notch higher in quality?Scot

Re: Sleep Always on youtube
Hey Scot I looked for "In My Image" on YT and could only find the short preview...is there a link? And yes, I felt it was time to just put it out there. It was actully inspired by the fact that a movie I saw 30 years ago and never since, "Mahoney's Last Stand", showed up on YT recently. I love that film so figured we'd be in good company :)Scotness wrote:I did the same thing with In My Image a while ago too - I think once these films reach the end of their commercial lifespan it's good to have them available out there in perpetuity just to push Super 8 along.Scot
I'll be posting here about my search for a print of MLS for a possible remaster. Right now I am CC'ing and rescaling the YT version. I'm in contact with the DP, Harry Makin, hoping he'll guide me as to what the original footage looked like. It's all bright green now.....
