Kodak stops production of Ektachrome 100D

There is awesome new color reversal stock coming soon -- based on AGFA Material for aerial photography (Avichrome 200 D). Yes, Agfa Belgium is still around and has massive amounts of this. The stock is made for E6 as well, PE based and simply looking fantastic. I have been shooting half a dozen of pre-production test cartridges now and am deeply in love with it. While certainly being more grainy than E100D (which doesn't matter a lot in projection), it has an incredible latitude, mellow colors and is very tolerant for mixed light. The best thing though is the PE base -- no jitter or jams at all! You can do crossfades on the last three feet of a cartridge and the registration is still perfect.

Wittner should have this market ready in the next weeks. I am sure you will love it.

I just developed two carts of it... they are currently drying. (Much more pragmatic than your machine!)

I don't have a telecine machine, but could film it of the wall. Not too meaningful probably, but maybe it gives a hint. It looks fantastic when projected.

I just want to add my 0.02c and comment on the demise of 100D.

After this announcement, I was on the verge of selling off my cameras and going digital. But after looking at my options and making some calls, I'm doubling down with film. I'm gearing up on another short form doco: I'm about to order a UP8 camera and purchase 800ft or so of vision3. My reasons are simple:

1. Going to neg, prices are actually cheaper for 95% of my work. Most of it is scanned and if I want to project I can get a print, which means the original is safe.
2. Lower contrast. 100D was convenient but the contrast made subject selection and lighting critical; moving to neg is more forgiving.

I'm looking forward to the new Wittner film, and hopefully the prices are competitive, but in the near term, I'm embracing the move to neg.

All I can say is that notwithstanding the constraints you mention, it is excellent! I should imagine that the stock shot in daylight will be exactly what we are all hoping for. I do hope it will be available soon.

This is just perfect thanks for sharing. I love the look and feel of it! The best things being the very late 70's colour palette - the grain - the texture - the fact that it is reversal and can be projected - and that it wil work with all well, nearly all super 8 cameras!

The Agfa reversal has a beautiful quality to it. It appears to be less dramatic (monochromatic?). Closer to a color negative. In fact it's rendition of filmic color space is lovely.

The Agfa reversal has a beautiful quality to it. It appears to be less dramatic (monochromatic?). Closer to a color negative. In fact it's rendition of filmic color space is lovely.

Yeah, that looks great! Just the thing to tickle my nostalgic feelings -- being born in the 80s, many books I have read had photos from the late 70s / early 80s and this film really has the same feeling. Got to buy some rolls when this becomes available

Reading the post from Wade makes me think that Kodak was perhaps caught by surpirse when the 100D stocks ran out so quickly after announcing they were discontinuing it and have been mulling it over since. I ran straight down to Stanleys here in London when I heard the news and put in a big Super 8 order which is safely enconsed in the freezer but I'm also happy to use neg. A number of people here in the UK who deal with Kodak have said to em that dealing with them via phone has got particulary bad over the past few months with one person gloomily describing it to me as being like the sort of death throes a division undergoes when the parent corporate has decided the division will die.

But perhaps I am being too gloomy.

That Agfa stock kind of reminds me of the old VNF 7240, low contrast and mild saturation. I really liked the 100D and bumbed that I never got to order one last case. I'm left with 3 rolls of S8 and 4 rolls of 16mm, and high hopes I can work with the S8 neg in a DIY way.
