Semi OT: RAID 0 setup choices?
For those of you using a RAID 0 array for film/video capture... are you using a controller card or motherboard with Windows?

Re: Semi OT: RAID 0 setup choices?
Hi,
I´ve always used PCI or PCIe raid cards. Highend stuff like 3ware or cheaper like Rocketraid or Promise and others. About a year ago I switched to onboard controllers and haven´t looked back since.
The reason is that for typical videoapplications RAID-0 this will work just great because they are fast (often faster than the raid controllers that are out there), you already have them on the mainboard and you save space inside the computer.
For saftey setups to secure data you should consider a raid card with battery backup unit, but for video and on a "work" drive just go with the onboard controllers. Works great for me doing 10 bit uncompressed HD captures on Macs (hackinktoshes) and PCs.
Best of luck!

Re: Semi OT: RAID 0 setup choices?
Thanks Andres, that's very helpful. I'm going to use it for the Retro 8 scanner as just a capture/work drive. Anything archived will go on an external drive. It's a newer PC intell i5 and ASUS motherboard that I just reconfigured to Vista 64bit from 32bit. I ended up loosing my sysyem RAID soon after the upgrade but i suspect it's a software glitch and not the motherboard. Sounds like it's better to just wipe it clean and start fresh with Windows 7 and onboard controller. The guys at the shop were trying to recommend i get a high end RAID controller or solid state drives. Think i'm better off renewing the system and resolving mystery issues instead of trying to solve it with expensive added harware. Thanks!
