mix n' match super 8 and super 16

Post by grainy »

hi folks, like others here, I got the last few carts of super 8 100d, these from my local lab.
What I'm thinking of doing is using the 100d in a montage to open a film I'm shooting this summer, intercutting the 100d with vision3 250... but the vision3 would be shot in super 16.

These would be outdoors, bright daylight shots and I think they'd look cool together, but I'm wondering about the frames; I sorta want to use the naitive super 8 squareish frame rather than masking the top and bottom, but I wonder then if it might be jarring to see a black mask to the left and right of the non-super 16 frames.

Any thoughts on this and/or can anyone think of a film where frame sizes were successfully intermixed like this?
Or failed? I can alwasy use the carts to shoot a last few color home movies.

best regards
G

Fascinating!

Martin Scorsese used Standard 16mm to represent the home movie memories of the main characters and then switched to 35mm film.

Here you go. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U27A0tqY2jY
I inter-cut Tri-X Super-8 with Vision2 100T Super-8 and 16mm Vision2 200T. Most people don't even know which is which aside from the Tri-X
I may sound stupid, but I hide it well.

It'll look good, there are lots of music videos and arty stuff that intercut formats, films and stocks. Sometimes jumping between visible sprocket holes to full screen 16x9. I'd be more worried about how many labs are going to be doing E-6 processing in six months. As with Kodachrome, my last cartridge of 100D will be shot on home movies this month, I've never regretted filming family.
