16mm Projectors: 3 shutter blade?

Post by mr_x »

Hi,

Picked up a 16mm Bell & Howell TQ3 and was amazed to discover a 2 blade shutter inside. No worries but I am so used to using a 3 blade (8mm). So are there 3 blade 16mm projectors please?

Thanks,

Ric

Most 16mm projectors have 2 blades.
Buy a Siemens 2000. You can select 2 or 3 blades very easy. And this projector has variable speed.

Have fun.

Multiple blades are only an anti-flicker mechanism of course, so a 3 blade 8mm at 16fps will be the same as a two blade 16mm at 24fps (48Hz). Obviously a 3 blade at 18fps will have a higher flicker frequency (54Hz) but guess the TQ3 may only really bother you if it has an 18fps setting (36Hz)
Off all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Thanks,

Possibly these are 3 blade 16mm projectors as well: B/H 642, Elmo 16CL, Kodak CT-1000 ?

Also an EIKI 16mm Film Projector SSL-O (slim line?)

Every 16mm projector I've ever owned has been 3 blades. But it's normal for people to take projectors apart and put a 5 blade on for doing film to video transfers and later put the 2 or 3 blade back on so it has more light again. Is your shutter just a flat piece of metal? If so you might be able to cut a 3 blade out of steel or plastic. Or buy one on ebay. I've had a 16mm bell and howell that was 3 blades so I'm sure it would be easy to find a junk projector on ebay you could buy just for parts for the blade and anything else you might break in the future. You should however enjoy the extra brightness a 2 blade gives because it won't be as bright afterwards.

Best regards for 2012 Slashmaster!

But no, my B&H is the holy grail after I picked her up for 20 quid - as a basket case - & she's been running like a winner ever since. I'm not looking that gift-horse in the mouth! However, if a similar projector comes on the scene I might tinker with that one instead :)

Kind thanks,

Ric
