Std/reg 8mm sound Projector/editor for digitizing audio
Anyone have a sound projector / audio editor for regular/std. 8mm they would like to get rid of / loan?
I have a couple reels with mag sound on the sprocket side and want to see if I can get it off. Rare to see this....
Thanks fellas!
(been a while since I've poked around here ;)

Justin,
You could potentially record a single overscan pass to record the audio track as an image file. Than you would need to isolate this part of the digital file and then convert the image file to an audio file. Some people have written custom conversion software. I am not aware of any open source alternatives.
Regards,
Nick

The soundtrack is magnetic. But I would be interested in any links/info you have about people converting image files of optical sound tracks to audio files.freedom4kids wrote:Justin,

My bad and a tad optimistic...
The magnetic stripe requires a physical electrical-magnetic field playback head. I was thinking of an optical process whereby John Gledhill can decode the digitally overscanned optical soundtrack into a resultant audio file. It is one of his specialties.
Good luck. It sounds like a proprietary Fairchild process form the early 1960's, e.g. I have a pristine Fairchild 900 camera w/ a 200 magnesium mag which can record a magnetic soundtrack.

There is one that I know of, the Eumig Mark S 802D.
It's a dual machine and reads the soundtrack on regular8 films.
I had one but sold it a few years ago.
Cheers,
Jean-Louis

I have a Kodak Kodasound 8 projector in excellent condition. It has a speaker output jack that I can connect to my AJA Kona card to input into my edit system. If you ship the films, I can extract the audio off your films and make an audio file for you. PM me if interested. We are a transfer facility in Seguin, Texas (www.davideo.tv).

I don't know how far this project has got http://tinyurl.com/92vz5qu but maybe worth keeping an eye on as the intention is to make the final application freely available. Quite demanding on the vertical resolution of the source images though.MovieStuff wrote:But I would be interested in any links/info you have about people converting image files of optical sound tracks to audio files.
