Wet Gate Telecine - Film-o-clean

Post by awallace42 »

Hello,

I wonder if anyone has any experience with the Film-o-Clean wet gate for projectors?

I'm in the US next month and I thought I might pick one up to use with my DIY telecine (image source camera capturing directed from the gate).

Before I shell out $350 I wondered if anyone had any opinions as to wether they are worth all that money? Can you really notice the difference?

Thanks in advance.

I have used it for around 20 50' films and it works fine. Used it with FilmGuard, ran the film through once without going through the projector gate, rewound (not through Film-O-Clean) then passed it through a second time on its way to the gate and got very nice captures.

I saved a bit of money by not buying all the adapters as I have a pretty good workshop to make my own in.

Down side is I've found the cleaning media reels need tweaking up from time to time as they can work loose. Also, it is not good to reverse the film very much for retakes as the cleaning media supply reel is not driven in reverse. Ok for just a few frames or so.

The occasional hair has got through and into the gate so not 100%, but not with every film either.

Still on the first media cleaning roll and only had to apply FilmGuard once, so not expensive to run.

If I get a chance, I'll try and post a raw capture somewhere, although it will not be a before and after...just an after! I expect the films I transferred were typical of the "stored in a shoe box in the attic" variety as far as cleanliness is concerned.

Any Moviestuff users with the Film O Clean? using it with/without cleaning product.
I understand the Moviestuff Sniper/Workprinter and other devices can probably not be fitted with this device as they are sprocketless.
However, during the cleaning phase, it would be handy to be able to use one of these in order to make the task easier.
Any pictures of a setup with rewinds would be welcome

Thanks info. I've ordered one and should be collecting it when I'm in the US next month so I'll let you know how it goes.

All the best,

Hi
Any update on that unit?
Have you managed to fix it between 2 rewinds?

Im not got my film-o-clean hooked up yet.

I decided to re do all the electrics on my "telecine" unit, so I've been busy rewiring and programming an Arduino to act as control for the motor, RGB led, hall sensor and fps counter.

I'm not far from putting everything back together, though we've a baby due any day so that might hold things up!
