Krasnogorsk 3 Crystal Sync Unit...complete?

Post by jamesb »

Hello-

Recently I picked up a K-3 with the Tobin TMX-D crystal drive. The problem is the crystal sync unit it missing the power supply and milliframe controller.

Could someone please tell me what I need to get to be able to start filming? I don' want to get the wrong power supply/controller and fry this unit. Thank you.

First, download the manual from the Tobin site:

Any 12VDC power pack will run the motor. A capacity of 1Ah to 2Ah should suffice.

Cheers,

A 12 volt motorcycle battery would give you endless run times, just find a 4-pin xlr cable, cut off the male end and connect the wires to the two terminals. Then make sure you have a 4-pin xlr cord (not the common 3-pin audio cable) to connect the battery to the motor. Once you have this, you'll find it useful for many other cameras...even some 35mm cameras.

If you have any further difficulty you can try contacting Clive at:

I can vouch for Clive's responsiveness via email. He will pick up the phone and chat if you wish. One of our precious remaining cinema engineering resources!

I am currently testing several of his motors. His latest batch of 24 TXM-20B for Bolex 1-1 shaft Rex 4/5/SB/SBM were sold to Du-All. Once they are gone that's it.

I'm pretty sure that's not the first time Clive has said that...

Thanks for the replies guys.

Guess i will have to invest in one of those 12V battery belts. I would try the motorcycle battery trick, but would probably fry this guy.

Might be interested in trading the K-3 for a FIlmo 70 DR or even selling. I'm making the leap from Super 8 and want to proceed slowly.

Look for a Scoopic MS. Easiest 16mm camera made to load & shoot. Lens is really great too, especially in the middle f-stop range. Auto iris is convienent as long as you lock it down once you've set it; doesn't breath like Super 8 cameras but can adjust when you don't want it to.

It can go complete manual or automatic and the best thing is you never have to wind it. My hand used to hurt after a half a day of shooting with the K3.

Batteries are easily and cheaply re-celled.

I really do like the Scoopic. From the test footage I've seen from Youtube, they look great. The 70-DR Filmos talk to me as well.

Just wonder, if anyone happened to know. If I did decide to sell the K-3 (i believe it is super 16mm)with the crystal sync unit, what would be a fair ballpark asking price? I will probably loose on the deal, but just wanted some opinions. Thanks.

Here are two clips shot entirely on a Scoopic MS:

Make sure you wait for the MS, not the M or earlier grey models. Batteries are easily re-celled at a Batteries Plus store in the U.S.

Since unused/new K-3s can be found for $175, the motor and Super 16 conversion probably add $400-450 to it. I'd still probably want a Scoopic MS over that just because its integrated better and less awkward to use. I have a maxed out K-3 as well (without motor) so I'm familiar with the camera.

What is the issue with the Scoopic M ...why is the MS better?

The Scoopic MS was the last model manufactured. It lets you add the rare 400 foot adapter. On the MS, Canon also added framing lines in the viewfinder, which is useful because if you go by the top & bottom "TV Safe" lines it basically is 16:9 framing.

Make sure you get a couple batteries with anything you buy. They are very easily re-celled by a Batteries Plus store in the U.S. Think the last one cost me $69 to re-cell.

These are also easily converted to Ultra-16 by Bernie O'Dorehty at Super 16, Inc. Super 16 is theoretically possible but would probably cost over $2000 and not worth it.

These cameras were used often by high school and college football programs to film games and practices for later review. Also for news guys picking up b-roll.

The M, MN or MS models are preferred over the older, original grey colored model because the lens is a step up and are simply newer and are usually in better shape.

I have three recently serviced MS's in great shape and would probably sell one with film, PM me if interested.
