Hi,

These brand new toys seem to use real movie film inside :

I have seen the first toy, it is made in China, and the part of where the "real movie film" is located is a bit more wide than 8mm, but not as wide as 16mm.... The toy was costing about USD 8 in local supermarket, so much cheaper than any low cost digital projector, and do provide a very basic projection system with nice colorful images.

Interesting! I wonder if the cartridges they talk about are actually available too.
There was something like this in the USA for years (in the 1970s at least), I remember a star-wars version, which I think was a 30 second trunchated version of the entire film. Depending on how fast you hand-cranked it. It didn't project, though, you had to look into the viewer.

There were Super 8 movie toys sold in places like Woolworths well into the late 1990's. There would be a little handhelfd battery operated viewer which had interchangeable looped films about footballers, clips of films such as Terminator 3. As far as I know you can still buy them from online shops. I bought some they looked like these;

I remember the "Disney Movie Viewer" cartridges. You could buy a handheld viewer or a little hand cranked projector...I had the latter. The cart contained a loop of film which probably ran considerably less than a minute. I recall having "The Rescuers" in one cart.

It would surprise me if toys are still being made on those lines but as yet a digital projector would be costly to implement in a toy and film would indeed be cheaper.
