Turning a Eumig S802 into a transfer unit

Post by Scotness »

I'm in the happy position of having some family members who want some Super 8 transferred to DVD - they've offered to pay for me to make a workprinter type transfer unit to do it and I can keep the transfer unit after the job is done.

So this is what I've got to work with -it's a Eumig S802

It's in reasonably good nick. For the family video I just need to do it as an SD DVD - however I also want to do HD transfers for myself. I was hoping to use my Canon HF11 for both - although I'll have to look into the HD outputs for that - but I think just getting the SD signal out and capturing that should be fairly straightforward.

So I've got a bit of money to spend on this - and I don't want to get bogged down in the nitty gritty of making the electronics myself - so if anyone has got various components they'd like to sell me please let me know.

I'm hoping I can get a bit of guidance through this too (VideoFred, Richard PT and others!!) - as I've never done anything like this before.

As far as I can tell straight off there's the following bits that need modification or buying:

- A more diffused back light for the projector
- An auto mouse clicky thingy
- Some modification to the motor to make it step forward one frame at a time??
- Extension tubes for the camera - although I do have a macro lense for it

So if you have anything you want to sell that I will need please let me know - and any general guidance much appreciated.

This will be fun to do since my 16mm projector was no use on that project! - and when I've got this going on HD I might even retransfer In My Image

Scotness,

You are going to find an immediate problem.

These are easy to resolve...

- A more diffused back light for the projector
- An auto mouse clicky thingy
- Extension tubes for the camera - although I do have a macro lense for it

(you cannot use "extension tubes" with your camera)

But THIS is NOT with this projector...

- Some modification to the motor to make it step forward one frame at a time??

The projector mechanism itself "steps it forward one frame at a time"... it's the speed at which you capture that is the problem... around 5 to 10 fps.
The motor in this machine can only run at a fixed speed (although it CAN be slowed electronically by about 10%; I actually do this for one purpose), so unless you incorporate some kind of reduction gear (for which there is little room) a completely new motor/gearbox is going to be needed. Many people have converted this machine.. all with a new drive system. My current machine is a Eumig 810D with BOTH the original motor for "on the fly" transfers AND an external motor for "frame by frame".

You need to find a manual speed control machine and modify it for the simplest and cheapest approach...
For example, see the machine described in the following....

http://8mmforum.film-tech.com/cgi-bin/u ... 3;t=001691

I converted that one and used it very successfully.... unfortunately Australia is a long way away!!

Don't know how similar the drive is in the S802 to the Mark 8, but if it has the same kind of rubber wheels you may be able to extend the range to move the small driver wheel further out on the driven wheel.

Some pictures of the Mark 8 on my website http://www.cine2digits.co.uk

Identical, Frank and as you say, you had to go for a pulley and a different motor to achieve the low speed required.
The discs are not large enough to get the ratio required using the existing components. Some significant re-engineering would be required.

Well I had the motor anyway and also built-in motor control for it as part of the capture system, so didn't even try to see how slow the original would go with the wheel out to the edge - I just went straight ahead and fitted the new DC motor. As it happens, I can now transfer RAW images at 16bit depth at 26fps if I want, so slowing down the motor is not even a requirement. Nice to have though for testing purposes and finding particular spots in the film. Also enables me to have a single frame step mode, handy for lining up at the start of a clip.

As a side benefit, the motor runs off of 24VDC, so no nasty ac mains near it as I run it off a brick mains adapter.

Thanks for the feedback guys - Richard sent me an email as well - I'll start looking for a more suitable projector and then get back here :-)

Scortness,

Just for information.... the machine I linked was marketed in Australia under the Hanimex banner. Model No 818 is IDENTICAL to mine and 808 is cosmetically similar. There should be plenty around, but if you look for one try and get a pristine one as possible. The speed will go right down to about 3fps if you remove the control "stop".
Another advantage is that the front of the projector is only 80mm from the film plane, permitting the use of "macro" lenses (usually about 125 mm focal length).
Should you do so, and require guidance in converting, email or pm me and I'll be pleased to help.No obligation.
Good luck!

Hi Granfer - much appreciated - I'll start scouring eBay and my local junk shops and see what I can come up with :-)
