Double Super 8 Film Stock

Post by BrentPowers »

Is there a source for DS8 color and b/w film stock anywhere on the US Mainland or must I send to Europe?

Thanks for the referals, guys. I thought I'd cast myself adrift investing in a converted Bolex H-8.

John,

What is your current supply of DS8 E100 like at the moment? Do you also stock other varieties? Do you have re-perfing capability?

Regards,

Nicholas

The only DS8 perforator in the United States that is known about is the one that belongs to Kodak. In Europe, Foma have one, as does GK film (which I think is the one Wittner has access to, but I am not certain of that). Karl Film also have one, but they are impossible to even talk to let alone do business with.
Apart from the Karl Film films which are as good as unavailable, in DS8 there is Ektachrome, and two black and white stocks - Fomapan and Orwo UN54 (available from Wittner in Germany only). Velvia no longer seems to be available in DS8.
Kodak no longer sell DS8 Ektachrome in 400' roll lengths and it doesn't appear in their catalogue at all in any length any longer, although Wittner may now be purchasing it in one or two thousand foot lengths as a special order.
While all Kodak super 8 film goes through a DS8 stage, Kodak have proven unwilling to sell any of the other stocks that end up in super 8 cartridges while it is in its DS8 state. Nor have they EVER proved willing to sell MP 16mm stock unperforated. It is extremely unlikely that any kodak stock other than Ektachrome will ever be available in DS8, unless they have a major change of heart ... but then again, maybe filing for bankrupcy protection is a catalyst for just such a change of heart.

Hi Richard!

Once again you are a wealth of information! And thank you for pinpointing the major "players" in the DS8 market. I shan't get into specifics at this time but things are percolating once again. I am also glad to see you have made contact with Carl Looper in your end of the global filmic neighbourhood.

I doubt we'll see anymore DS8 100d from kodak they made one final batch last year. GK/Wittner velvia DS8 was very jittery, the GK offing almost jammed up my DS8 camera, all 200ft of GK DS8 50D ended up in the bin, the transportation was that bad!. I just hope Wittner are able to source larger rolls of DS8 100d as this is currently the only colour stock that runs perfect through my cameras!

Wittner stated firmly that there will be DS8 of E100d as long as there is S8 E100d.
Kind regards,

Indeed. this is why I suspect they are purchasing 1000 or 2000 foot rolls from Kodak as a special order.
As I say, all super 8 stock is now first perforated as DS8 from unperforated 16mm, then slit.
If only they would let Mr Wittner buy other super 8 stocks before they slit it.

I doubt Wittner will rely on GKfilm. Things are extremly slow at GK. Wittner is running a big company and cannot afford all these postponements and complications.

Wittner has some articles on their site about purchasing and taking delivery of film-handling-machines to make sure everything can be done inhouse.
Like described here:
17.08.2009 - Perforatoren für Schmalfilmformate eingetroffen
http://www.wittner-kinotechnik.de/neu/news2009.php

Here you have some GK 2010 info on his site:
http://www.gkfilm.de/de/2_neuigkeiten/n ... 1271441066
likely old info:
http://www.gkfilm.de/de/7_filmmaterial/cv-ds8.html

They state themselves that they buy long rolls, who are intermediate in the S8 cartridge filling, and spool these onto small rolls.
Wittner buys by the truckload from Kodak. Their Kodak accountmanager is likely more willing than the average retail department there :)
Kind regards,

André
