What are people working on?

Post by Nigel »

As a way to get caught up with y'all I thought I would ask to see what everyone is doing in film/photography.

Me.

After my shoot in Pakistan a couple years back I made a slight shift to still photography with a focus on bands. I had been shooting for a couple regional glossy rags and some blogs and they were bringing in a lot of exposure for me. So, I kept my wagon hitched to their train.

As far as movies. Outside a few gigs 1st AC'ing and working for NFL Films I was barely shooting. My 4008 hasn't run in ages. And, my Aaton has been a fixture in my closet.

But, this spring has started to change. I have put the still photography on the back burner as movie work has seemingly started to pick up.

This summer I'm shooting a feature on film which seems to be unheard of. Other than wanting to strangle the line producer and AD it is something I'm looking forward to.

You?

What happened to Paul Cotto and his slicer?

The guy that was trying to make 200m mags?

Good Luck

Nice to see you on the forum.

Paul Cotto just disappeared from this forum approx when he retired from the Airforce and with him went the perforator project, about so iirc.

The 200' mag guy disappeared my belive due to heavy critisisn on this forum over image stability which he could not get control over due to samples posted. Stability was not good but the critisism here was bad and not aproperiate vs the huge efforts the guy put in to the project. In the end it seemed that he cooperated with Pro8mm for film material.
For some reason he could not improve the image stability and this and the bad critisism, possibly due to a communication quirk between all implied he and the probjct faded away. I belive he could have got a good project in the end but the air went out of the baloon. If you search the forum you'll fin the tread.

As for my film project they are mostly on the fun side. I am to shoot WWII RC model planes using outdated Russian BW Super8 film at 36 fps to make it look more real when played back at 25 or 18 fps. This is for fun/experimental only. This time i will use my Beaulieu 5008 MS to add vignetting from its shitty Schneider lens making it look m
Looking more WWII.
Last year I shot the same just for fun using PlusX and my 1014 XLS but it came out quMite well so I decided to try to make a more realistic version.
I also do have some experimental work on my shelf using Fuji F500T which is my favourite film stock now.

Last week I visited Japan to shoot some promo stuff for my web site but this was all digital for convenience using my Sigma SD14 and Sony HD 1920P video camera. I like shhoting the Sigma's RAW format but the Sony Images looks shit video as ever. I allways prefer film over digital whenever possible.

Let's see -
Six months ago I did a 15-minute documentary on back yard insect life with lots of macro work. I used Nizo 6056 and Ricoh 800Z. This was in coordination with a high school here with students interested in photography and others in biology. This was transfered to video and is used now in biology classes on insect life in the same high school.

Right now, time permitting, I am doing a short on pond life - yeah I know, but I am into this sort of things - with biology students. I come from a scientific background with a wide knowledge of photography and close up movie making. So this comes in handy.

In addition - I work with a band and record some of their events. I use the Nizo 6056 which is crystal synched along with a crystal sony tape recorder and a Moviflex MS8.

S8Booster, The F500T has been a long time favorite. Unfortunately Fuji Mo-Pic in the USA has decided to go through a middle man which means higher prices. And, the BW model plane stuff looked fun! The thing looks full size on some of the shots when it's in the air. It wouldn't be hard to get some prospective on the ground shots and make it look huge. One suggestion is make sure you take the camera case out of the background. ;)

Andersens Tears, The film is a low budget feature. We shoot in August and I'm waiting to do the final location scouting with the director and then get on with hiring my 1st AC and G&E. It is about a guy that is trapped in a small town while the townsfolk exact some local justice. It should be fun and since I haven't shot a feature in 2 years I'm not going to pass up the opportunity or the $$$.

Good Luck

I love it! I would shoot insects all the time as a kid and I even tried to do it with my Aaton. I have a Kilfit 90mm Macro that can get some great stuff. The biggest issue I had was trying to attract and then keep the insects I was trying to shoot. I should have just bought a bag of ladybugs and a few walking sticks and kept up shooting.

Where can I see some of it?

Good Luck

For about 2.5 years, I was working on a stop motion project, just for fun:

Hello Nigel, I suppose I'm new since you last posted!
I've been peddling around a short film "The Last City in the East" to festivals for the last year that we shot on Super 8 TriX
http://lastcityintheeast.blogspot.com/2 ... -sene.html

I also have a sort of experimental saturday morning matinee that just started in the circuit, "Time of the Robots", not shot on Super 8, but certainly of interest to filmy types.

Thinking about shooting my next film, a feature, on Super 8 but worried that my cameras' motors can't handle long term stress and not excited about buying more new used cameras... might just go with the bolex H16 this time... still not sure!

Do keep us posted about your feature!
regards

In the beginning....LOL....Actually it was a lot of fun. Just took longer than I anticipated as work kept me pretty busy and this was a spare time project.

Really good to hear what everyone's up to.

As for myself, the big one I'm planning to do is a feature length film based on Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique. As kind of preparation for it, I'll be off to Italy and France this summer to make a short documentary about Berlioz (all to be shot on Super 8 ). I'm also hoping to do a much smaller project this summer: the ultimate foot-fetish film (probably a single cartridge thing).
