eumig nautica

Post by retrogrouch »

Hi everyone,

I just scored a brand new eumig nuatica from my local camera store- new dead stock, still in the box. I have wanted one ever since reading Super8man's site. Ive got two problems, though- the first is that the zoom is really stiff, Im sure from sitting on the shelf for 30 years. The second is that It is missing the handle. I don't care about the handle, but after I down loaded the manual, I realized that the wide angle lens was in it, and that it might be a nessesary thing to take it in the water!

Help.

Thanks for reading,

I have done some intensive snooping around the net, and my suspicions are correct: the lens is necessary to take it under water. Now I am officially ion the market for a PMA lens, apparently they are very rare to find on their own. ( If some one has one please PM me!)

This leads to the next possible solution- make something. To machine something up would be easy, but their are few questions I don't know the answer to .

The first set is about the glass. If I use an old uv filter, will the salt water ruin the coating- should I take it off first? I will not be going more than 6 ft under, so will a normal filter be thick enough to with stand the pressure.

The second set is about the camera itself- what does the PMA switch do- will basic chunk of glass cause some type of chromatic aberration?

Thanks for reading ( Again)

You can still use it underwater without the lens...it will be fine.

As Mike suggested, you can still use the Nautica underwater without the PMA. However, it will be in the macro mode permanently - use the hand strap to measure the correct distance to your subject. And make sure that the lens is zoomed out all the way to it's widest setting and that the lever thingy is set to the PMA position! Have fun!

Thanks for the response Patrick. I was hoping to use it for some in water surfing shots next week- Do you think that it will work in permanent macro mode? ( based on Mikes footage, I would guess yes, but I don't like wasting film :D ) Thanks again for the post

I'm pretty sure that it works underwater NOT in PMA mode.

You need to switch it into PMA mode for the wide angle adapter to work or to shoot macros, but it should work fine in the normal zoom mode underwater.

Cool I've been reading about the PMA's on the web, and am starting to get a better understanding of the little animal. I love up close sports cinematography, and the PMA sounds like It is something I still want. My other WD converters won't work, because the size interferes with the view of the Electric Eye. It seems that Eumig was really into them in the end, and I was wondering if the PMa's from the Mini 3 PMA or the Mini 5 PMA would work, and if they have the same thread size (46mm).

Thanks for your input everybody. It is really appreciated.
