Canon 514XLS trouble?

Post by mr_x »

Hi,

Shot 2 carts of Super8 on this the other day. The first cart went without a hitch. The second cart wouldn't move. Pressed the trigger release - nothing. I took the cart out and tried - nothing. Then I fiddled with the runners inside the film compartment, at the bottom. Suddenly the motor cut in again. I replaced the film and it went through with no further hitches.

Any ideas please?

Had a Nizo 800-S which died on me a few years back, similar sort of stop-go scenario. Concerned.

Thanks,

Ric

Hi,

"wouldn't move" = no sound from the motor at all? (Most likely only the trigger got stuck or there's a loose contact in the grip's battery-holder or the problem is related to the "four way switch of on, off, running lock and single frame.".)
-or-
"wouldn't move" = the motor makes some strange noises but nevertheless the film doesn't get transported at all? (Well...ermmm... maybe some corrosion or some too weak spring-contacts in the battery compartment...)

Thanks. Press trigger-release > motor inert / no sound. Light meter functioning (off batteries) though. Pilot light at front of camera should glow red when camera running - but no light at all, so some kind of voltage interrupt somewhere.

When it started the second time went straight through without a hitch - total mystery. But as I say, a Nizo S-800 did this to me a few years back, then got progressively worse. That used to be my 'A1' camera now it's a "collectors item", ie, it doesn't work at all :(

I hope the 514 doesn't go the same way because i have just customised the filter thread for anamorphic filming :-o

As the light meter is working, the main switch and the contacts/cables to the batteries should be okay. So IMHO the problem is related to the release-trigger (stuck micro-switch?) or to the buttons in the cartridge chamber that detect the presence of a cart (if I recall correctly, this Canon should have one or two micro-switchs in the chamber that'll detect whether a cart has been entered and whether it's a silent or a sound cart).

sounds like the motor release mechanism then. Tricky. The motor runs when there is no cart in the camera, so it wouldn't be a cart-detection issue.
