How is this trick done on film?
On this film at 4:00 there is a trick where they get 3 odd shaped images on the screen. Easy enough to do on video but clearly the film is old enough that it wasn't, so how is it done on film? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qegIRh9D ... re=related

This effect was probably achieved with an optical printer using masks. I used to own an J-K K-103 optical printer whose 16mm projection module accepted a variety of masks permitting printing up to four images in a frame through multiple passes.

Yes, that's definitely optical printer work. Tripple exposing the film through appropriate cut out mattes each time.

I remember reading about something like that using the back wind crank on Bolex 8mm cameras. I cant remember if there was something you could purchase that went over the lens or you just had to mask off half the lens with a piece of cardboard or something. I may have to try some experiments like that.
Re: How is this trick done on film?
You could use a matte box with masks (like those offered by Bolex), but the results wouldn't be as precise as those achieved with an optical printer.

actually Bauer/Braun (also many more ) offered a complete set for "trick filming" a pretty huge set.
It was possible to wind back the film to add up to 4 squares +++ of independent film scenes on one frame or clip.
all the gear was supplied in a suitcase of its own.
the stuff in the film above was a post production job of course
