I think it's just a $75 test package for film processing and transfer. I don't see where you can buy the film by itself quite yet.

Yes - it's a pre-release promotional thing - like when beta versions of software are made available to "can't wait" early adopters. But they do say it will be on the shelves soon. The fact that it also includes a Kodak survey could be indicative of Kodak considering release of such. Perhaps Pro8 are doing limited runs while Kodak are um and ah-ing.

Re: Pro8mm vision3 50d already available!
That would indeed be quite a coup as a special order form Kodak. Has there ever been a special order for an 8mm format that has ever actually come off? (perhaps the existence of 100d and Tri-X in R8 is an example of one ...).freedom4kids wrote:I aim to get this perfed as R8 for UP8.
Or are you intending to have the stock perforated by Mr Nowill?
I guess it is unlikely that kodak will be listing this as available in double perforated lengths.

Count me on that - if it's going to happen. Shooting UP8 neg - particularly 50D - will make the investment in UP8 even better.Will2 wrote:PM me when you get ready to order, I'll tag some on if you do.freedom4kids wrote:I aim to get this perfed as R8 for UP8.
A few years ago I worked on a computer animated film (which including some video source). The content of the film was centered on Australia's strange policy of locking up refugees for inordinate amounts of time. Anyway - it was printed to 35mm for anamorphic screening (ala Cinemascope). Looked absolutely amazing on the big screen. Very powerful and poetic. Would love to do the same with UP8 - ie. shoot UP8, 2K transfer to digital, with print back to 35mm, squeezed for anamorphic projection. There's plenty of venues across the planet with 35mm anamorphic projection capability. The original producer on the animated film didn't want to do anamorphic 35mm because he argued it would limit distribution. He was exceptionally insistent. The director consulted me about it. I told him: how many times do you get an opportunity to do a cinemascope film on 35mm (being independant filmmakers with limited resources). Who cares if distribution is limited. Tell the producer off. You can always make a standard aspect film next time. The director agreed. He fired the producer (as you can do on an independant film) and we got to make a cinemascope 35mm film. As it turned out there were plenty of venues/festivals that could screen it - and more to the point - were more than happy to screen it. An opportunity to wipe the dust off their anamorphic lens.

I have finally realized that in fact forum member "eskinazi" is none other than Edward Nowill.
He has confirmed that at this time he cannot offer a single perf 16mm to 2 perf 8mm service as that would require a significant investment in the required die.
But he wetted my appetite with a general description regarding something about 8mm manufacturing "post-Kodak". Back to you Edward.

Re: Pro8mm vision3 50d already available!
Kodak's problems are a big worry as their stock range is extensive & many products are not covered by other manufacturers.
Colour film needs big R&D.Black/white manufacturers are more commonplace. The future may involve all the usual manufacturers/suppliers of m.p. film supplying a range of b/w stocks & a more limited range of colour ones.I have found colour reversal to be the biggest seller. The Kodak 7363 b/w ortho high contrast positive has a following too [as it looks so good as a projected reversal].Pro 8 do this as a super8 stock. Kodak currently manufacture a whole family of such emulsions-wonderful for artists/experimenters.I only have limited demand for colour neg,but have recently reperforated Fuji colour negative stocks
which have an appeal all of their own.I have used their colour neg type F64 & liked the results [as 16mm].
Ilford ,after a management buyout, continue to manufacture their range of b/w films & papers & they report a steady demand for their products, confident that this will remain so long into the future.
If kodak goes this way we will see the slower selling stocks being dumped.Buy while you can & as much as you can for now
as the future is uncertain.

Does that mean you now have the ability to reperf 16mm colour neg to 8mm? Or am I misunderstanding the thread here?eskinazi wrote:I only have limited demand for colour neg, but have recently reperforated Fuji colour negative stocks

Or to put it another way: how much 16mm colour neg can I get reperfed to 8mm for $1000 (including cost of neg).

Re: Pro8mm vision3 50d already available!
As long as it starts out as double perf.
Currently, the Kodak catalogue lists 3 colour negative stocks available in double perf 16mm: Vision 3 500t, V3 250D and V3 200t
Vision 2 50d sadly isn't. I doubt wether V3 50d will be. But we can hope.

Re: Pro8mm vision3 50d already available!
Ah, I see. Thanks Richard. That clears it up. I was under the mistaken impression there wasn't any neg to 8mm possible. But as I now see, it's just 50D that's the issue. For my purposes V3 200T and F64 will be fine (for UP8 shooting).richard p. t. wrote:As long as it starts out as double perf.
