Orwo North America
Some months ago I was exchanging email with the Orwo distributor in the USA. He had said Orwo was going to expand services in North America, but didn't explain what that meant. Recently he sent me a message saying their North American web site was up and running. http://www.orwona.com They sell various 16mm and 35mm products. If I understood his reply to my query, I believe they keep stock on supply in the USA for sale. These can be ordered via the website. Too bad they don't have 8mm stocks. The site also has a link to a film shot mostly on Orwo UN54. It's got some pretty nice photography.

Am I wrong or are those prices pretty reasonable?
Re: Orwo North America
The 400ft loads are very reasonable, me thinks!

Re: Orwo North America
very interesting, love the variety and I'm a big b/w fan
Besides that lonely little clip that they post on vimeo, have any "name" films been shot on this stock?
Unafraid to show my ignorance, I admit the Orwo name sounds familiar, but just barely.

Reasonable for the 400' but about double Kodak's price for 100'. Strange, they list 100' 16mm & 35mm as the same price when it's twice as much film...Good news for Eyemo folks looking for B&W 35mm on 100' reels.beamascope wrote:Am I wrong or are those prices pretty reasonable?

Good to hear that a film manufacturer expands these days!
Just for information: Wittner in Germany has provided Orwo UN54 in both Standard8 and Super8 for quite a few years now. In case you're interested what it looks like, here are a couple of films I shot with this stock:

400' loads are very reasonable and I think I will give them a try in the new year once my current supplies are exhausted. 100' loads are a joke both in price and presentation. For both 100 & 400 ' loads they don't give you the extra 10' Kodak does for the film wasted in loading and the 100' loads are shipped on a core, not a daylight spool. So Bolex shooters will need to either load the film in a changing bag (and have a core adapter) or wind the film onto their own daylight spools. Seems like they have deliberately priced those loads so as not to be bothered by people only wanted a couple rolls of film.
However given how difficult it was to get this film over here before its actually pretty awesome news! What is also really impressive is that they are a Kodak alternative for lab stocks. Which is encouraging for anyone interested in seeing 35mm B&W revival prints at your local art house or the few people doing film finishes with optical or contact printers.

Here's an interesting movie shot with both Orwo UN54 and Kodachrome on 16mm: http://vimeo.com/31523919
However, they stated that they had some problems with sprocket spacing. I wonder if those problems have been taken a look by ORWO -- the film was shot in 2005, so I guess they have at least had the time to do that.

This is a great B/W film. Can be processes either in negative or reversal!
