SOM Berthiot Pan Cinor

Post by PhiPsi »

Hello,
I have spotted a SOM Berthiot Pan Cinor 1:2 17-85mm on eBay:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/130596657741?ssP ... 500wt_1413
Can this lens be used with a Bolex H16 RX (without any limitations)?
If so, do I need the external viewfinder, which is sold in a different auction, or can I simply use the camera's reflex viewfinder?
Thanks
Philipp

I have one of these, but never used it. However I think you can use it on a Bolex with a C-mount.

That is not a Rex lens (Rx willed be marked on any lens made for use on a Bolex reflex camera) so it should only be used on
non-reflex Bolex cameras. That is what it was made for. Without the side finder, it's use is extremely limited. I used such a lens for a number of years on my first Bolex non-reflex 16mm camera and other C mount cameras. It produced pretty decent if not spectacular images, although a bit clunky to use.

Thanks Andreas and David!
I expected it to be an issue with an RX. The only fact, that made me assume, that it might work with an RX, is the last foto of the auction. On the cover picture of the manual the lens seems to be mounted on some kind of Bolex RX...

While not the sharpest lens available, we use them without problem in our film school on Bolex RX cameras for the first year students. Because they are properly collimated, they are OK. Of course, like any lens, it will perform better at f/4 or f/5.6
All the dogleg viewfinders are removed by the way.

Cheers,

Out of curiosity, are the aperture blades positioned before or after the viewfinder attachment? Of course if their positioned after that point, then you'd always have a nice bright image, regardless of the aperture setting. If positioned before, then at least you'd see how much depth of field you'd get as you close down. Although that's the case with the majority of 16mm reflex systems, I think I'd prefer the former - to always have a bright image...I think super 8 spoiled me!

Thanks for your advice!
Unfortunately my bid was not high enough, so I won't be able to tell anything about the position of the aperture blades.
