Posted Some New BW & C (2011) S8 Clips On The Tube
did a short shoot of my brothers´model airplane this summer to simulate WWII "look".
most of it is BW and some colour.
the film is "raw" uncut and a bit hit and miss on BW exposure but some of it is good.

The airborne B&W stuff could pass as a real plane at times.

At the 50 second mark and the 1.10 mark, or somewhere, the clips, combined with the small format and the dust looked absolutely fantastic. VERY VERY real from all my watching of The World at War series from the 70s. Fantastic stuff.

yes!
21st century Lydecker. About 10x more convincing than CGI.

Very very nice! The film "Tora, Tora, Tora" made extensive use of models that were indeed very convincing. I saw the film on a huge screen with a 70mm roadshow print and it sure fooled me.

Excellent idea (and realisation): Once the plane is in the sky (without any trees or houses in the background), I couldn't tell whether it's a model or a real plane.
Now you only need a someone with a British plane and some music from BoB or other old war movies...

This space was left intenionally blank.

Yes, a great deal is real aircraft. They used some full scale models on the ground such as the scenes where the P-40's are getting shot up while trying to take off. Also models were used old school style for some of the Japanese fleet shots. I thought all the footage was real planes at the time then I read about them making the film. I remember one photo which showed a highly detailed model of a zero on an aircraft carrier deck with wind and rain effects with a special effects guy standing next to the "carrier" while the camera was rolling from the opposite side. I like well done model work for aircraft much more than CGI aircraft. Very hard to get CGI aircraft convincing enough for me.Thanks...ALL THESE YEARS, I thought Tora, Tora, Tora was made with real planes...thanks...

Can you explain the film transfer to video...how was it done. Great detail. Here is a Hollywood tip for shooting models...film in varying degrees of slow motion for more realistic rendition.

Re: Posted Some New BW & C S8 Clips (2011) On The Tube
thanks for all kinds comments. first of all apart from trying to instruct my brother to avoid high speeds and to abrupt maneuvers, climbs, descents and too tight turns i did little to actually simulate "real" planes. it was the "real" BW WWIIish look that was the goal. unfortunately he could not quite match my instructions.
anyway, this "project" showed me that it can be fairly easy to simulate "real" planes by a few adjustments and avoid backgrounds which are too obvious out of scale vs the plane.
i may shoot another BW cart or 2 - again instructing my brother or other "pilots" about avoiding the obvious problems as mentioned earlier. additionally i may shoot the film at 36 fps - transferred at 25 fps PAL (this was shot at 18 fps - transfered to 25 fps PAL). this will smooth out the rapid nature of smaller RC planes. this one is not very big.
for professional "faking" i believe they use up to 1/3 scale RC models while this is about 1/6th or 1/5th or so. that will make a big difference alone.
this was a simple test to ensure my brother that BW film and real film will look more convincing than any digital alternative in the amateur segment.
the original version posted was well received by the bad guys but they asked me to trim away some parts - but not the aircraft except from short acro piece at the end of the BW roll. they also asked for some German WWII ompa-paa music which i added - actual Luftwaffe WWII music - well....
i also took away some camera unrestes at beginning and end of some of the "takes" so here is the "final" version:
(FINAL VERSION) BF109E and FW190 RC Super8 film BW and V200T Shot with a Canon 1014 XL-S
i have a lot of very good takes of real "good guys" WWII planes which will be posted later.
here is a quite interesting relatively new comparable clip of a real Bf109G owned by Messerchmitt Bölkow Blohm and flown by a very capable pilot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nj77mJlzrc
the Bf109 was a beast to land and take off especially on tarmac. here it seems that the pilot lets the plane control it self a bit rather than over compensate.
one FDL-60 telecine machine and one FDL-90 (upgraded to Quadra) with Pogle controller and Digital Vision colour correction and noise reduction. my films were transferred by "economy" method.
the films were shot at 18 fps - and transfered to PAL25 fps.
shoot... more film.

there is a "war" going on in this RC club between the "good guys" (allies) and the "bad guys" from which my brother attends with a few planes, the good guys outnumbers the bad goys by a huge margin so there will be allied planes posted later.jpolzfuss wrote:Excellent idea (and realisation): Once the plane is in the sky (without any trees or houses in the background), I couldn't tell whether it's a model or a real plane. Now you only need a someone with a British plane and some music from BoB or other old war movies...

hi Tommy. the transfer of my films was done by Filmtek AS Norway, (http://www.filmtek.no/index.php?lang=no) a company run by the moderator of this forum. i am not sure which of the transfer machines he used for this film but this is the gear they use:Tommy wrote:Can you explain the film transfer to video...how was it done. Have a look at this one ( http://vimeo.com/7812803 ) - it has scraps of original footage.

interesting, showing amongst other a Focke Wulf Condor 200 originally a passenger plane converted to a long range reconnaissance - long range bomber attacking ships in the atlantic and another of the few rare german bombers with a twin tail.
anyway - here is a WWII clip with very good image quality - must be good transfer and original...

Re: Posted Some New BW & C (2011) S8 Clips On The Tube
Just added an experimental version with real aicraft dubbed sound. It is not very acurate its a left hand job just to get an impression. Balance between sound and music not good. Will be upgraded later.
