Bauer A512: variable shutter and exposure

Post by joelpierre »

Is the variable shutter system of the Bauer A512 allows to film — streaming — with the adjustable shutter speed (in manual mode without using the crossfade)?

Does the automatic exposure system is modified by the aperture of the shutter?

Does the automatic exposure system may be changed (by changing the internal settings of potentiometers) to make it compatible with the film Ektachrome 100D?

I bought the camera and have tried it. So I can answer my questions.

Closing the variable shutter has no effect on the diaphragm.

Position 1 is equivalent to half the duration of exposure.

Position 2, a quarter.

For 18 frames per second:
Position OPEN (150°) = 1/43 s
Position 1 (75°): 1/86 s
Position 2 (37°): 1/172 s

Hello ,does the bauer a512 camera read 100d properly?the manual written in german says 'sie können ihrer kamera alle super 8 kassetten von 15 bis 23 din empfindlichkeit verwenden'

translated via gooogletranslate ,they can meet all the super 8 camera cassettes 15 to 23 use din sensitivity.
Has anyone used this camera with 100d with positive results.
Thanks

Many of these manuals took liberty with the word 'bis' when they meant: 15 and 23
A512 supports only 40/160. You can tell by opening the film compartment and observe the pins. There is only one pin that can be depressed by the film gate: this is the 40/160 sensor.
As jeolpierre noticed: closing the shutter does not affect the diaphragm. Meaning: this camera will support 320 and 640 ASA by closing the shutter. It also suppors 50D as is. But with 100D, you'll be underexposing by 2/3 stop. There is no Back Light control on the A512 like many of their other models. A back light control would have supported 100D when pressed.
Stupid Bauer, for all their compact beautiful designs, did not bother with a nice +1/-1 knob like the Eumig Viennette 8 for example.
There is a potentiometer inside this camera. Someone in Europe modifies these and other cameras by adding a +1/-1 knob in 1/3 steps. He calls his modification the Adams64. Try to get him to answer an email! Good luck with that :)

The notch for automatic adjustment of the sensitivity of Ektachrome 100D film cartridge is identical to the Ektachrome 160T film cartridge.

No camera can make the difference between the two cartridges.

There is no sensor Daylight / Tungsten on the Bauer A512.

The filter is manually positioned (position Daylight or Tungsten).

Switching between Daylight and Tungsten produces a variation of half a diaphragm.

We can therefore consider that the camera Bauer A512 is directly usable with the Ektachrome 100D film without correction.

Underexposure is theoretical and negligible, indeed, beneficial. Moreover, the diaphragm can be adjusted manually if desired.

Yes there are - Do not forget that the 100D does NOT have the filter notch on it; there are cameras with filter pins such that when filter pin is pressed the camera will NOT change the exposure. In this case, such cameras sense the 160T and expose at 100ASA WITH filter engaged. 100D cartridge removes the filter because it does not have the filter notch. When such a camera does NOT change the exposure, it will expose 100D correctly WITHOUT a filter. Cameras such as Nizos, Moviflexes, Minolta D10 and D12 etc.... etc... do exactly that.
A512 senses the 100D as 160T. Remove the filter via switch and it is still exposing the cartridge as 160 NOT 100, because it will close aperture by 2/3 of a stop.
Switching between Daylight and Tungsten produces a variation of half a diaphragm.
It is more like 2/3 of a stop.

A 2/3 stop underexposure may be fine or may be not. But the point is that A512 is not equipped to handle 100D correctly, but certain other cameras do.
As far as Bauer cameras go, even though the S207XL, for example, behave the same as A512, but it is better equipped to handle 100D because it has a wider shutter angle of 220 degrees.

Sorry guys, but Bauers (just very few exceptions) cannot expose correctly Ektachrome 100D. This was explained by a ex-worker of the Bauer factory who nowadays runs the French website http://www.cine-super8.net/

I can tell you that my experiences with under-exposing 100D have not been good in the past. When I first used this film in my Minolta Autopak 8 D6 the camera did not expose the film properly. It read the film as 160. The results were not good when the film returned from the lab. All the scenes were very dark and the colors were way to saturated. Skin tones were reddish. 100d benefits from over-exposure. I now have my Minolta set to over-exposure by 1 Fstop. The results have been fantastic. Skin tones look more natural and the overall scenes benefit from more light. 100D handles over-exposure quite well. You can really push the limits with this film if you so desire. At least that has been my experiences. I now mainly shoot 100D in regular 8mm, and have the cameras set to over-expose by 1 Fstop and the results are very good. Only beach scenes have been a little touch and go.

This is good to know. This is why I suggested that this will work fine with cameras like Bauer S207XL but not the A512.
About the Minolta D6 - Your problem is easily fixed. D6 does read this as 160T, but the D6 works also with 100T. So, all you have to do is shorten the film speed notch on the 100D cartridge from 160T notch to 100T notch, make sure the filter is not engaged, and you are all set. OR do the +1 correction as you note.
Also, notice that by setting camera to +1 correction as you did, you are simply exposing 100D correctly (actually overexposing by just 1/3 stop) because this correction is canceling out the 2/3 of stop underexposure of the 160 reading of your camera.

Thank you for the replys, Shame about its limited film speed reading, still very usable for tri-x but would have been a good all rounder.

Congratulations on your camera Joel. I am now on my 5th or 6th A512... brilliant cameras, well designed and a super-sharp lens.

But you have discovered two weaknesses of the camera: that crazy variable shutter button system (don't forget if you press the button while it's in the wrong position or you'll waste a lot of film!) and the film speed settings.

I have successfully changed both the speed and the metering on the Bauer C107 and C109 cameras, but the A512 is far more complicated and I have yet to try resetting it.

Here is what the inside looks like:
