Hi,
I have built a 16mm telecine system using a canon 7d with a macro 35mm lens. i am imaging the emulsion side of the film. for lighting i am using a fiber optic light source and two flash opal defusers. I can produce 2k and 4k frames that rival any system is have seen. My problem is software. using stop motion software is slow and inefficient. the best software is have tried as a demo is capturemate. This software is no longer available to purchase unless you buy a moviestuff telecine system for 4k to 10K. I sent this company an email and asked if they could make an exception and sell me this software but as of yet no reply (it's been three weeks). I found Frame by Frame software which is freeware and it works but will crash after two or three hundred frames so this software has not worked out. I need to image 2 frames per second and each frame is 1mb. I have a mac pro 8 core using a studio 2 blackmagic card and have no problem capturing at this date rate.
Can anyone recommend any software designed for this job. I will even consider purchasing a used or broken moviestuff system if it comes with this software.
Thanks for any help
DN

Re: 16mm telecine software
I presume by "Capturemate" you are referring to the Workprinter Software for MAC, although you do not mention whether you are using a MAC computer.
There are very few workable programs for MAC; but many for PC under Windows. However, I think you will find that you do not need to source a used Workprinter with Capturemate; my understanding is that if you purchase a used Workprinter 9even a non-working or scrap one), with or without Software, from any source, providing evidence of acquisition and the Serial number should enable you to purchase Capturemate from Moviestuff.
I personally use PC with "Cinecap", although I wish to move to HD, probably using "Video Capturix".

Bob,
I have looked at istopmotion. unless you buy the pro version you can not image HD. the software cost $490 us.
So far the demo version will not see my Blackmagic card. i have imported saved images to play with the software and it could work

Sorry if there has been a communication problem. Our local ISPN decided to switch the local email to Gmail without telling anyone and we have had holy hell trying to make it work like it is supposed to with Thunderbird. Emails not getting to us and our emails not getting to customers. Just awful. Gmail sucks fetid pond water. Anyway, I never received your email that I am aware of. But our email appears to be working now so try again or call and I will be happy to chat with you.

Agreed - I could never get it to work with thunderbird.MovieStuff wrote:Gmail sucks fetid pond water.

DN: It sounds unusual that your original software should work for a few hundred frames then crash? I assume you've tried everything you can to keep it going - do you think some temp directory might be maxing out on it?

Roger,
Thanks so much for letting me know about your email issues. I know from past posts and your website you have been very responsive to questions. My name is David Nofri and I will resend my email.
Scot,
The crash problem was with Frame by Frame, not Capturemate. I think images are stored in memory and I am overrunning the buffer. If I stop imaging after 100 frames and process the images there is no crash. If Frame by Frame could handle thousands of frames it would be a very good fit for telecine use
I downloaded a demo version of istopmotion. If you want of capture images in HD (1920x1080 or higher) you must buy the pro version for $495, ouch. This program is capable and works for telecine. I ran a sample of 2600 frames with no problems, the cost is the problem.
The bottom line for telecine, Capturemate for ease of use and high quality is still the best. The only drawback is not being able to edit individual, or series of frames. When I capture a series of still images with my 7d I can edit them in Aperture in groups. When there is an exposure or white balance change in the film it very easy to make corrections.

Re: 16mm telecine software
P.S. I had to call support at istopmotion and after making some changes the software could see my blackmagic studio 2 card.
There is no clue using the software that would allow a normal user to fix this issue. It involved a legacy check box.
