What's the story on the Crown 8mm movie camera?
While searching 8mm movie cameras I came across this one called the Crown 8. Never heard of Crown before. Seems like a neat little camera. Reminds me some what of an older Canon. So what's the story on these? Here's a photo showing the Crown 8.

Here is the camera that I think looks a lot like the Crown. The famous and wonderful looking Canon Cine 8-T.

Re: What's the story on the Crown 8mm movie camera?
I had a crown 8mm camera that had a 3 lens turret. I picked it up at an estate sale for $5 in like new condition. It was still in the original box. I shot a roll of film with it and found that it was usable but not the best camera. I shot some of the film at high speed to get some slow motion and found that the motion had tracers. I don't get that with any of my Bolex cameras. The lenses were not the best either. Overall it was a low end camera but can be usable at normal speed (16 or 18 fps). Yours looks like it's in the same condition mine was but you may have a better lens. Are you going to shoot a roll of film with it?

No the camera in the photo is not mine. I found this pic online. I don't plan to buy one, but I was curious to know the history. Like you I use Bolex. A Bolex P4 and K2 are the cameras of my choice. Thanks for the description of your Crown and how it performed. I kind of assumed that the Crown might not have been a top notch camera but I just wasn't sure.

I think it's a low end Japanese brand. I sold mine on ebay about a year ago. I'll stick with my Bolex unless I find something interesting at an estate sale.

Re: What's the story on the Crown 8mm movie camera?
It depends on the situation. I've got a C8, B8, D8, P1, P2 H8 and H8 Rex 4. If I'm traveling or want something portable I use one of the compact models, preferably the P1 and P2. If I want something more compact than the P1 or P2 I use the B8 or D8 without the grip handle. If I'm home I usually use the H8 Rex 4 on a tripod. Right now I'm in Saipan on business so I brought my P2. I like the P1 better but I didn't want to risk damaging one of my better cameras by hauling it half way around the world. By the way, I just shoot home movies for my personal use but I do strive to get the best results I can on a budget.Shanec8mm wrote:What kind of Bolex do you use?BAC wrote:I think it's a low end Japanese brand. I would like to get a K2 for the Kern lens. I do have the Vario Switar 36EE lens for my H8 Rex 4 which I believe is basically the same lens.

Like you I make movies for my own personal use. When the movies come back I make my wife sit through the final edit LOL. Deep down I think she enjoys watching herself on the big screen, and seeing home movies in a different way. She commented one day how unique the movies look on 8mm. When she sees a movie has come back from the lab she'll say is that ready for viewing yet? LOL. I got her hooked but she'll never admit it LOL.
The K2 by the way is a pleasure to use. The focusing is easy, and the lens is amazingly sharp. Don't underestimate a P4 either. The P4 has the coincident image rangefinder that is the best I've ever seen. Easy to focus and very accurate.
